Office 2016 suddenly failed after update

I have one user with Office Pro 2016 running on Windows 10 Pro, and everything was perfect from day one, until 2 days ago. Outlook would not start up. Just opens and dies.

I tried to run online repair and it gives error 30088-26. I tried to uninstall it and even that failed. I think that was error 30160-23(2).

I used the manual uninstaller and forced it to uninstall, then reinstalled Office.
Everything was perfect again until it started to update, then it crashes again with the same errors.

I have deleted her profile from appdata, done a clean install (5 times), it runs perfectly until it says You have Office updates ready to install, then it's dead again.

Right now I have her running by manually blocking Office updates, but I don't want to do this.
    Any suggestions?

Please check the Office licensing status as told here: Office License Management Tool - Windows 10 Forums

Take a screenshot of Command Prompt window after running necessary commands, and post it here.

OK, you are using a Visual Studio subscription (VS, former MSDN) Office 2016. If this is installed from an ISO as it seems to be, I mean not a Click-to-Run installation, it is most probably activated with a volume licensing key. It is not meant for resale, and should only be run by a user with an active, valid Visual Studio subscription. VS licenses and product keys are for personal use only.

If you have a VS subscription, and ISO was downloaded directly by you from subscriber downloads, everything should be OK and we have to start looking other reasons for your issues. However, if you got the key and ISO from someone else, then the issue might be explained with that person's VS subscription no longer being active, which might cause issues when Office checks the license validity.

Long story, short version: Is your Office from your own, active VS subscription?

Yes, of course we know this. She's a developer and that's what MSDN is for. We've purchased it for testing every year since 1994.

What does this have to do with her problem?

The ISO is the same one used to build her machine, and it is directly from that license, downloaded from MS site. And there was no problem from the day 2016 was released until this week.

The issue is 100% around office updates. We have already established that.

As long is the latest update isn't applied, it continues to work.

I didn't want to, nor have I any reason to offend you. I simply stated a fact, based on what I have seen and experienced by myself. I've seen Office work well with a VS volume license, and continue working after VS subscription is no longer active, but stopping updates at that point.

To be clear, it had to established if this was your case or not. Apparently not, so we need to find other reasons for your issue.

I will check something and post back as soon as I have something worth posting.

No problem. It is not a VL, it is an individual subscription, I forget to add that.
I appreciate your time looking at this.

From the little information I've been able to get from MicroSoft regarding 30088-26, it seems to point to a proxy issue regarding Windows updates. I checked the proxy settings and they are correct. And also Windows Update succeeds. It's only Office that fails. I also checked her communication through the firewall to verify that the Office updates are indeed downloading, and they are.

    It's a real puzzler.

Just an idea, something I would try:

First, be sure all Office applications have been closed, not running. Then, manually download and apply / run all the updates released on Wednesday 14th from Microsoft Update Catalog: Microsoft Update Catalog

Be sure to download correct bit version of the updates, depending on if you have 32 bit or 64 bit Office installed. There are three updates available for each bit version, in addition to language interface pack which you most probably do not need.
