    Just an idea, something I would try:

    First, be sure all Office applications have been closed, not running. Then, manually download and apply / run all the updates released on Wednesday 14th from Microsoft Update Catalog: Microsoft Update Catalog

    Be sure to download correct bit version of the updates, depending on if you have 32 bit or 64 bit Office installed. There are three updates available for each bit version, in addition to language interface pack which you most probably do not need.

    Thanks, it's a good idea.
    However, I downloaded the 2016 32bit patches and each one says "the upgrade patch cannot be installed.... application may be missing or a different version..."

    But it absolutely is not missing, and it is definitely 2016 32 bit.

    I'm just going to leave it as is until we do the next rebuild. Thanks for your suggestions!

    one last comment and question.

    This thing seems to be doing "click to run", which she NEVER installed or consented to.
    This is a standalone instance of Office and always was, for years. It appears that MicroSoft has changed this without her consent or knowledge.

    Have you heard of anything like this before?

    No I haven't, but it gave me an idea. I need half an hour to an hour, I will post an idea but I need to check its validity first.

    Just an idea, it's of course up to you if you want to test it.

    First, create a system backup image, then completely uninstall Office. When done, see this post about how to use Office Deployment Tool (ODT): Need to uninstall some apps from Office 2019 - Page 2 - Windows 10 Forums

    In your case, the script shown in the above mentioned post would be this:

    Code:
    <Configuration>
      <Add OfficeClientEdition="32" Channel="Targeted">
      <Product ID="ProPlusRetail">
         <Language ID="en-us" />
      </Product>
      </Add>
      <Display Level="None" AcceptEULA="TRUE" />
         <Updates Enabled="TRUE" UpdatePath="" Channel="Targeted" />
    </Configuration>

    That would download and install retail version of Office 2016 Pro Plus, not O365 subscription version. I believe this would resolve the update issue.

    Sure, I'll try it. But you have to understand something.
    I still have the original unchanged ISO that was used to install this system, and it was installed 10/14/2015. It has not changed.

    How could it install the standalone version a few years ago, and now the exact same ISO is installing C2R? You just open it and it starts installing with no option to change anything.

    It's crazy.

    That is something I cannot understand, and why I thought it might be better doing this with ODT instead of ISO. It should work, and it should allow updates.

    Of course, you need to activate it with your key.

    @Kari

    Hi there

    In this section of the forum I've posted on this a few times if you look for a few of my previous posts in this part of the Forum.

    I had initially Office 2016 iso from MSDN (now discontinued but still installable) and everything was fine.

    However Windows updates the wretched thing to this new "Click to run" thing -- I call it the "Kindergarten version" where all config options are gone and it's virtually impossible to manually configure or even change email accounts that don't exist in the Ms's built in ISP auto config database -- so if you have your own domains / mail servers you can get totally hosed up.

    You don't get any options on what parts of office to install whether you want them or not -- I don't need Access, or Publisher for starters.

    You can sort of manually config email in Outlook ONLY by using the applet in the control panel but IMAP gets hosed up on my machines --I could only see SENT email on the machine that sent the email not on all devices.

    I found after the click 2 run version also in outlook that if I switched languages I couldn't delete email in the first language !!! I.e if I was in English I couldn't delete icelandic emails and vice versa. A Real dogs dinner - probably because of the versions of Office 2016 getting mixed up with each other. !!!!

    I couldn't install click 2 run from new as it wouldn't activate with the MSDN key. There's no problem with the stand alone iso and the key (valid of course).

    It was all working perfectly until it became converted to the Click 2 Run ("Kindergarten version").

    My solution : Re-install the original iso stand alone version and inhibit windows updating it.

    --OR -- and this is what I've done -- go back to Office 2010 as it's still in support until Q4 2020 and I don't need all the latest "Work in teams" type of stuff anyway.

    I find this trend for "auto config everything" not good at all as when it fails you are 100% hosed. There should always be "advanced" or "manual" options.

    Note also for the unwary -- if you install a second language even on the stand alone version office 2016 will change to "Click to run" automatically as well -- unless you install the language from the language pack separate iso -- so for example Finnish is OK as it's on the language pack iso but icelandic isn't - you get that from office download and that's also where update screws office up.

    The old technet / MSDN keys BTW ARE totally still valid so suggest until Ms fix this wretched problem you block office updates.

    My office 2010 is a VL version so I've re-installed on 5 machines -- I've kept one Office 2016 on a VM for testing every so often to hope (vainly I suppose as Ms want everybody to go to office/365 subscriptions) that it gets fixed.

    Office 2010 still gets regular updates via WU - not via the office update as the click 2 run does -- so a separate process.

    Cheers

    Jimbo, hi. I've read all your threads a few days ago and I agree.

    Microsoft, I hope you are listening. I've been a fanboy since 1981, and a devoted my career to developing systems first for MSDOS, and then for each version of Windows.

    This is the end of the road. We are done with MS products.

    This is not a rant, just that I think it needs to be said.
    Software as a service === NOPE. You can try and force us and trick us into using it but it isn't going to happen.
