Office 365 sometimes unable to start

Out of nowhere in last few days I boot up and try to launch an office program such as word or excel and get met after several seconds of nothing with a dialogue box of blah, blah, excel, or winword is unable to start and some innocuous code. Press ok to close. And it just won't open no matter how many times I try unless I restart machine. Anybody else see this? I wonder if the latest public build is buggy but it only happened at weekend for first time. Fine for several boots after and then happens again tonight. I looged out and in but no different so had to restart machine where upon it is fine again. Any ideas? I wonder if it's something to do with that new home/splash page MS seems to be pushing on 365 users causing aggro. I checked reliability history and no errors in here to do with office but it does seem to coincide with a COM surrogate has stopped working message

My gut feeling is it's a bug playing up and next slew of office updates will fix it (maybe something in v1809 which I am on not playing nice) but a slight concern nonetheless

No ideas, but I can't remember any problems with Word. Running 2016 Home and Student Office:

    Microsoft Word 2016 MSO (16.10325.20118) 32 bit
    Product ID:
    Session ID:
    Version 1817 (Build 11001.20074 Click-To-Run)

Maybe the info will give you a comparison?

Thank you. I’ll hsve to check version later but I think it’s a 365 thing! A couple mates have seen same thing last few days so I guess problem is on MS side. Another foul up from MS!

It’s been ok for over a week so I guess the last updates addressed it

Nope, happened again this morning. ALways accompanies one of these in reliability monitor too! Have to always restart when this happens to make it work again whereupon office will be fine for days. It started happening on the last public build and continues with the latest I have which is 1810 ( 11001.20108 click to run). I'm also running latest 1809 since it's first day of release. Fact it's sp intermittent I think it is maybe a server related issue but once it fails it doesn't recover til next reboot. I try simply logging out of windows and going back in but that yields no joy Office 365 sometimes unable to start-capture1.jpgOffice 365 sometimes unable to start-capture2.jpg

    Same here on one computer.
Completely random. Ran Ok for a week then Exel refused to start.
    A reboot fixed it.

Thanks for feeding back. Whilst I am not happy you are running into the same issue it provides further evidence that there is something seriously wrong at MS with the last 2 public builds on office 365. I have friends reporting the same. I am absolutely bombarding MS support as I find it unacceptable. I haven’t had the issue since start of last week but I am sure it will re emerge at some point. I have no idea why it happens but it’s extreme intermittent nature makes me suspect useless MS servers at play. I think maybe (when online) you boot up and launch a 365 program there is a handshake with MS server and if it does not get a response or expected result then this comes up with accompanying com surrogate error in reliability monitor and cripples office unless you completely restart. Total hypothesis here but it’s my theory

    cheers

I tried a repair install the second time it happened to me.
Had to do a full online repair as the first option would not work.
Seemed to work for a few days then boom Word decided not to work.
Again a reboot cured it. Definitely something screwy with the last 2 builds.

Yes it’s pretty poor show. Only if you don’t mind, as I’m trying to build a case to MS, tweeting office support too? The more that do it the more they have to take notice!
