    Gone back to Office 2010

    Hi folks.

The latest problems with OUTLOOK 2016 and OUTLOOK 2019 just made me uninstall that lot and go back to OFFICE 2010 which is still getting regular updates -- I don't need some of the "collaboration" stuff in 2016/2019-- the base package office 2010 is just fine. SKYPE works just fine too.

My main concern was in getting Outlook 2016 or Outlook 2019 to function correctly with IMAP and my own domain mail servers.

First the new auto config wouldn't work and I had to mess around with control panel applet.

Then there was a problem with the Unicode text .

I finally gave up when SENT mail from say machine A couldn't be seen when I logged on to Machine B or C even though config OK and set as IMAP server so post should be on the server -- .
When checking on the actual server with its web application some mail was in the sent mail - the other was just lost -- goodness knows where it went.

If I'm doing any sort of e-commerce from the domain I must have 100% reliable mail client.

Office 2010 (Outlook 2010) functions 100% in every case and on all machines.

Not sure how Ms has managed to hose up a really decent mail client.

latest nonsense also for those using BIG screens (60 inch sort of thingeys) you can't adjust the fonts for headings etc any more properly -- you just get selection large-->bigger-->biggest and it looks really stupid on a large screen if your mail text is nice and large but reading the mailbox the headings are TINY compared to the text !!!!!!

Outlook 2010 works fine with adjustable font sizes

    update -- even weirder

On another machine with OUTLOOK 2016 installed the previous SENT MAIL on machine with office 2010 installed is visible.

Now if I SEND email from outlook 2016 it's visible in the SENT MAIL folder on that machine -- logon to machine with OUTLOOK 2010 -- mail isn't there in sent folder -- I've double and triple checked every possible config setting.

I tested also with Outlook 2007 running on an XP VM as well -- no problems.

Latest versions of outlook (2016 and 2019 -- haven't got outlook/365 so can't test that) are a disaster zone for an email client it seems (at least to me). Funny how this stuff worked OK until they switched it all to "Click 2 Run" versions. !!!! That broke things big time.

I noticed the limitations in configuring Outlook 2016. This is what MS calls progress achieved by employing too many baby programmers and inadequate software engineering and testing.

I still get the old menus that work in Office 2016, if I install it from my MSDN ISO and don't let it update. One it updates I get those same useless auto config menu's you see in Office 2019. It made it a PITA to reconfigure when I switched ISP's.
One thing that really annoys me is having to enter an e-mail address before you can do anything, even if you want to manually configure it?

    Hi there
    @alphanumeric

that old MSDN iso is now "deprecated" by Ms although it will still install.

If you set email up BEFORE applying any updates the old menus are still there and it does work -- however once it starts updating is when you get really and royally hosed up. !!!!! You'll find also after an update it's converted to click 2 run and depending on your email set up it's hideously broken.

There's no way either using English version of Windows with an Icelandic domain type of server having some non latin characters would even be in the auto config database -- so what then

    e.g jįlfbęrgaršar.is

You can manual config still by applet in control panel where you'll see the old menus again but if you use IMAP you will find SENT MAIL sometimes just disappears or isn't visible when you logon to another computer or phone. BEFORE updates it works fine !!!.

Note even for outlook 2019 the applet in control panel says outlook 2016. !!!

Anyway a non issue for me now --am happily using Office 2010 again.

    Cheers

Yeah, its marked as "discontinured" in "My Visual Studio" subscription. I can still download it and use it with the product keys listed for it. I also have another set of product codes that only work with a web install of Office 2016.
Similar deal with Office 2019, I have two sets of keys listed, one for web installs and one for ISO installs. The 2019 Office Pro ISO has the new depreciated menus by default though. I now notice my Office 2019 web install keys are under an "Office 365" listing. Thats new, it wasn't listed that way when I originally requested my product codes? All are listed as Retail keys too? Project Profession and Visio Profession are listed twice, once under office 365 and once stand alone. Each has a "different" list of product codes. One set for the 365 version and one for the ISO instal version.
