    Word

I tied to replace all my Word docs with Libre office and followed all the steps. I changed the default to .doc and the font to a MS one.
When I used the wizard to convert the 268 files, it was a mixture of Word and Libre.
I then performed a system recovery so I am OK but, why did this happen?
What did I do wrong. My Word security runs out in 2020 so I thought I would give Libre Office a shot and get used to it. I guess it is $ 160.

I don't know that you did anything wrong.

I would set the default for .doc and .docx to LibreOffice. I would stop there. If you want to open a document double click on it. Should open fine. Then when you want to save it should ask you if you want to save in Libre or Word. I save in Word.

If you want I guess you can convert one my one but if you decide to go back there will be another step. I'm not a big fan of mass conversion. How could they have possibly tested for different conditions, settings, formatting etc.

I do not think mass conversion with the wizard functioned. What do you think of Office Home and Student regarding Word being in the cloud as far as document security is concerned?
    I would prefer an installation.

Could you post a link to that says it does not install on your PC. I think you can use the cloud storage but I was unaware that it was only based in the cloud.

Today if you have an Outlook.com ( or other MS address) you can use cloud version (or android or iphone)

I've installed LibreOffice on several computers over the last several years and never actually had to convert the documents, just right-click a file in Documents and choose Open with then in the resultant list choose LibreOffice and at the bottom put a checkmark in Always use this program. There may be times where the formatting of a document has screwed up and can't be opened or will show something not usable like machine language.

What new PC did you eventually buy? Did you build it yourself or buy a pre-assembled Microcenter? Or have them build it from your parts list? Just curious as I know you were giving it a lot of thought.

I think you can buy Office Home and Student 2016 and have a purely local installation and purely local storage. $130 to $150.

Office 2019 Home and Student for a local installation is now on sale for about $150; it has a 7 year support cycle. Main support until 2023, then extended another 2 years till 2025.

Office 2016 was introduced in 2015, but has a 10 year support cycle. Main support until 2020 and extended support until 2025.

The standalone versions of Office 2019 run ONLY on Windows 10. I think the Office 365 subscription version will still support Windows 7 and 8.1.

I'm still on the standalone Home and Student 2010 and may eventually go to 2016 purely to remain under support, not because of new features.

Thanks for the interest. Due to illness the PC which is assembled on paper is on hold.
I am confused about Word but thank you for taking the time. Are you getting am Office subscription or replacing Home and Student with the 2016 local installation ?
I am pleased to know I can install it instead of online. Where can I obtain it as I looked everywhere but only found the cloud version, after looking closely.

I am staying with Home and Student 2010 local installation for now. If I upgrade, I will have to decide if I want 2016 local or 2019 local. The former is $20 cheaper currently. The support expiration date for both is 2025.

I hope to NEVER buy a subscription to any software or operating system. That whole idea is one of the reasons I gave up on cable TV. I have a 1 PC household and have no "mobile" devices beyond a TV remote control.

If I were buying today, I'd buy 2016 local to save the $20 and possibly avoid any as yet unknown issues with the newly released 2019.

2019 local, "keycard". I think means they send you a card with the activation code by FedEx or US mail. You then download the product from MS and activate using the code on the card.

Microsoft Office Home and Student 2019 Mac Key Card - Newegg.com

2019 local "digital download"; I think this is same as above EXCEPT that you receive the activation code by Email.

Microsoft Office Home and Student 2019 - 1 device, Windows 10 PCMac Download - Newegg.com

2016 local digital download for 130

    Microsoft Office Home and Student 2016 - Download - 1PC - Newegg.com

2016 local key card for 130

Microsoft Office Home and Student 2016 Product Key Card - 1 PC - Newegg.com

All of these are for "1 PC". I'm reasonably sure they can be re-installed on a machine you buy or build in the future AS LONG AS you install on ONLY 1 machine at a time.

I think you download from the link below. You need to have a "Microsoft account" to download, but the installation is local.

    Office

All of the above is based on my best understanding as of today. I did research in the last few weeks as I had money burning a hole in my pocket and I was thinking about upgrading my Office 2010.

If you could post where you saw it is in cloud.

I'm unaware of any Office that you can't install on your device.

Now we should not confuse where Office is installed with where you get Office. Literally no one ships software to end user any more. You buy and if you are lucky you get a box. Some are just plastic cards.
