Thanks for referring me to post #8. I agree with him. I won't do subscriptions; Google is coud and even changed it drive name -no place for my data.
Abiword falls short. Libreoffice was great till I noticed the trouble with mobile devices. I did not know there was a MS Home and Student 2019 ; I thought only 2016. I agree that getting the proven 2016 is the better idea as they both expire in 2015 if I quoted him correctly.
Tough to get a compatible word processor that is cross platform and ok with mobil.

Went looking. They use to sell Word at around that price but just Word. So if you bought each product standalone it cost more than the three (Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

I could not find it as a standalone product anywhere.

What seems to be out there now is a one year subscription for one PC for Office 365 at $69.99

I went to newegg and while you can find through your link an Office 2016 I wasn't getting an add to cart. Likely cause I'm north of border or its been withdrawn.

Since 2019 is out my bet is MS has shut off the 2016 tap. The beauty of not shipping disks, you just don't make it available.

You have to make and log into a "Microsoft Account" to download it. I guess there is no way around that.

I just read the user comments about Home and Student 2016 on Newegg.

There were some complaints about it, such as the following. I have no idea if these complaints are valid, but apparently you don't have much choice as earlier versions (2010 and 2013) are unavailable.

No more custom installing. You will be forced to install all of it.

Runs mandatory "upgrader" in background or you can't open files

You must maintain a microsoft account which it connects to verify or gets disabled

Can't be offline for extended time or it can't login to MS account and stops working

"updated" menus and UI is clunky and annoying

installs a msoffice printer app that hijacks ALL print jobs and had to be removed

Are you planning on the 16 or 19?
My son is very happy with Google docx an the old Drive which changed its name.
I don't like Google but he is proficient and won't touch MS.
Few choices and none good.

As of this instant, my plan is to stay with 2010.

I have no reason to EVER buy Office again unless I get in some type of jam where 2010 won't install or has major security issues.

If you were to put a gun on me and force me to buy 2016 or 2019, I'd choose 2016. I'd buy 2016 if I had to buy today.

I wish I had confirmation on the issues complained about by a 2016 purchaser in post 24. Those type of things put me off, since I don't really have to buy a new Office at all.

But maybe you do. I think you'd be hard pressed to come up with reasons to buy 2019 rather than 2016.

And maybe the complaints in post 24 are overblown.

Just a note, Office 2016 is the first suite to have the individual application Version numbers the same, i.e. Word 16, Excel 16, etc. Previous suite Versions such as Office 2013 had application Version 15, Office 2010 was Version 14, etc. There was no Version 13. This numbering apparently started with Office 4.x and app Version 6. Important to use the full Version number to avoid confusion with earlier ones.

It seems the choices are:
1- Libreoffice which is great but has mobile issues - I tried it - mobile works but is just another step.
2-Google docs which confuses me and is cloud based - they are in transition to change the name of Drive to another name
3-Abiword etc. with limitations regarding cross platform and compatibility
3-MS - I won't subscribe/ I have Word 2010 via Office Home and Student 2010 which is security supported till 2020+ I only need the word processor/
4-Home and Student @ $160. for a piece of cardboard and 25 characters. I had a product like that and one day I went to the site which was closed.

You ought to try it. Mobility is if you send an email with Libre as your attachment, it says to the recipient to 'click here' to have Google docs open the document.
Let me know if you try it. I can tell you about details if you do such as changing the default extension or format.
Maybe we can both figure this out.
I installed LIbre, right clicked a word file, chose the default as libre not word and all my word docs were fine. Then I changed the default extension which I can explain easily if you are interested.

I am seriously looking at Libre Writer b/c the mobility issue is minor and actually does work and the rest is great.

I don't use a SmartPhone but do keep PortableApps on a Thumb drive and install the LibreOffice Portable version on that, just a bit slow as most things are with External drives, but quite satisfactory.

Another choice for a word processor only is the built-in WordPad in Start, W section, Windows Accessories. It's a "lite" version of Word but good enough for letter writing, saving/creating recipes, keeping notes, etc., although spell-checking may be an issue.

What's the over-riding reason to do anything when you already have 2010??

Worry about 2020 in 2020.

Unless Newegg has changed prices in the last few days, Home and Student 2016 is $130, not $160.
