Patrick I know you have always been a huge fan of 365... however as we all know MS Office is about Outlook, right? So that is what we are paying for...
@Edwin decided.. well stuff that and went with the base version, OK..buts he's on mind altering stuff...as we know.. LOL
Anyway been using Preview 2019 and find no real inclination to upgrade from my 2013 licence (the caveat...I am not a power user)

I don't know at all what that is. Perhaps it is useful but please, I beg you all, no-one tell me as I don't care.
If you need it is is either worth $149 or $10 a month or (if you have no clue what it is like me), not worth it.
I wouldn't pay $150 just for dark theme that is for sure.
It is often a very good deal, just not always.
You should think how many devices/people are involved.
Personally I hate subscriptions so I will not do it even if it would be cheaper. I do get Apple Music free from my son so I'm a bit of a hypocryte there, but it is his call. I can live with free music.
I find office 365 great value, 6 users for £79 per year with 1TB cloud storage space each is a bargain.
It is but you understand that some people like to pay and be done with it?
Sure I could pay for O365 or I could buy a small beer once a fortnight for more or less the same price. The cost is trivial.
It all adds up though - your mobile, internet, Netflix, etc they all add up
My father (who is in his '80s) for example refuses categorically to sign up to any subscription for anything.

As I stated, my reasoning might not fit your situation and I understand that.
Yes, my argument did depend upon paying for Dropbox (or any other cloud storage for that matter). If you have a need or a desire to have 1TB+ of space, Office365 becomes very compelling. Dropbox is $99.99 a year for 1TB. iCloud is 9.99 a month for 2TB. Google One is $9.99 a month for 2TB.
You are right, I could buy the Home and Business option. For some reason I didn't see that option when I was looking at prices. Even at $249 per installed copy, if I wanted 2 copies, I am at $500. That's 5 years of Office365.
Instead of paying $500 today, and being out all $500 today, I would rather spend $99.99 today, and invest that remaining $400 into something else. But you are right, if all you need is the $149 version and you ONLY want 1 copy, and you have 0 use for Cloud Storage space, by all means just buy the license for the software and be done with it.
So, like I said, I use the Cloud storage space (all of my pics from my phone go into OneDrive). I'm going to pay for space in the cloud anyway. So, for the cost of OneDrive I can get the Office Suite for pretty much 0. And I can sell off unused users on my subscription to friends and family to lower my cost. Microsoft even has a guide that explains how to share your subscription with your friends and family
To me, Office365 is and always has been a no-brainer.
Please dont get me wrong - it is a good deal.
Unless you already paid for an earlier version of Office.
Or have no friends.
