Ms confirms - eventually Office to be subscription only

Hi folks.

Totally different considerations as far as large corporations and individuals are concerned. For corporations makes huge sense - especially as this cost all goes against tax offsets in any case.

For individuals totally different considerations apply -- although given the decreasing cost base as well it may in the future make sense for individuals to leave their entire I.T as well to the cloud --that's some way off yet.

Another reason why a lot of businesses are going "Cloud based" is that in the days of increasing automation etc it will be cheaper to have infrastructure off site -- also political processes can come into play regarding things like foreign workers, immigration, visas, work permit sponsorship etc etc.

If all the major infrastructure is in the cloud a business can just get on with its core businesses -- the cloud providers have the problem of staffing etc etc.

I find in the IT field these days, if you aren't a cloud engineer/architect you are going to find it difficult to find positions in many corporations today. I tried with the recepie above, but halved it to 250g flower, 125g butter and, as you said, a tiny bit of water.

It ended up like cardboard.

It was all cold, I chopped it up with a knife so as not to warm it and I left the thing in the fridge for 2 hours before rolling as advised so what did I do wrong?

More butter? Less? Some other fat (that is vegetarian ideally)?

It shouldn't be that difficult surely?

Ever since I joined TenForums it always amused me that 'Help me Bake' was listed as a sister-site. That link seems to have been quietly removed now on TF (at least, for the skin I'm using) but can still be seen on the other sites like here on Eight Forums...

Edit: Yup - still there on an older skin...

I enjoy cooking as well (apart from Football -- proper version with the round ball). cycling, boozing (of course) and a whole slew of other nefarious activities which I won't elaborate on here).

To me, MS Office is becoming less and less worth it all the time ...
When I was working, I could get the HUP version for $10 -- and that was for a "permanent" license, and for the Pro Plus version, to boot.
Then, Office Home and Student was available for $150 for three permanent licenses. Still a good deal at $50 for a single permanent license.
But when it went to $150 for a single license, I could no longer afford it.
And since then, due to the greater use of mobile devices, I find that I use my WebMail all the time now, and no longer have any justification to buy an MS Office version that includes Outlook.

Additionally, it used to be a "no-brainer" when you wanted an office suite that handled the "new" Word and Excel files simply because the free or open-source alternatives simply didn't handle the MS Office files as well as MS Office.

But now, Softmaker FreeOffice 2018 claims to be able to handle MS Office files without any problems, so if all you need (which is what most folks need) is Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, you now have a working free alternative that you don't have to pay an ongoing subscription fee to use.

Yeah, and I know that $80 a year is not a LOT of money -- but to me, it's the principle -- I don't want to "lease" software.

No thank you. I'm not keen on subscriptions for Office, or any other software, for that matter.
Yet another dumbass plan by Microsoft.

Sure I could pay for O365 or I could buy a small beer once a fortnight for more or less the same price. The cost is trivial.

It all adds up though - your mobile, internet, Netflix, etc they all add up

I get that subscriptions as @jimbo45 already pointed out earlier are extremely profitable for businesses (they provide a constant stream of cash flow) but holistically, they tend to add up. A $2.99/month here, $9.99 there, $1.99 here, $19.99 there, $7.99 here eventually adds up to $500/month in services/applications/memberships e.t.c.

I have always had a strong belief that things such as rent/mortgage, phone bill, car (if you don't buy out right), utilities are the traditional products/services that warrant a monthly charge. But in 2018, even a no-name supposedly free to try application on the iOS AppStore (such a mile tracker for your vehicle) requires a monthly fee for usage.

It's rather frustrating how many companies are switching to this model without simultaneously offering buy outright options...
