Outlook 2016 setup still broken (is gettable around)

    Hi folks

Outlook 2016 setup is STILL hosed up after latest updates.

Manual setup of email accounts doesn't seem possible -- you have to go into the control panel and use the applets.

here's the defect in basic plain English

    1) when creating email account you get following screen

    2) on it you can check the box for create manually -- however the wretched thing instead of presenting you with the screens to set it up tries to connect to any email address you put in --that's probably OK for some email accounts but what if you have different in / outbound servers and non standard email servers with different passwords for inbound and outbound etc.

    3) to get round - go into control panel (yes it's still there even in new release of Windows (1809) and click on the outlook 2016 applet then you get the classical setup screens again so you can connect to exchange / non standard mail servers again just like before they introduced this stupid change.

It will be interesting to see how Outlook 2019 handles this? Under my Visual Studio Enterprise Subscription I have Office Professional Plus 2016 (Discontinued) and a newer Office professional Plus 2016 listing. Each with thier own set of product Codes. If I clcik the download link for the first one I get an ISO. If I install with that I get the old Outlook setup options that work. If I click the download link for the new listing I get redirected to hear Office
My only option is a Web / cloud install. I did it once and I could not get Outlook to work / connect to my ISP's POP3 account no way no how. I can't remeber the exact error but I think it was an authentication error? I initially got what you posted above, pretty sure thats what I saw. Switched to manual and used the same exact settings I've always used and that work with the ISO install. Would not work. Test settings failed. To be honest though, I didn't spend a whole lot of time trying to sort it out. I just started over with my what works mounted Office ISO.
There are a few people at Microsoft that I would like to grab by the shoulders and give a good shake and ask "what were you thinking"?

    Hi there @Edwin

It may work if the email is standard ISP that exists in database -- what screen did you get when setting up your email account and what version of office are you currently using -- this stuff only recently happens now with the latest updates.

Office (not click2run --old discontinued MSDN type or Enterprise VL versions which are in iso format) still work the old way. The new click2run versions installed via internet and cloud servers from Ms fails. Note the installation doesn't fail - only setting up some outlook email accounts.

Please show screenshot of your Outlook create account screen (blank out any personal data such as the email address etc).

I'm sure the auto setup will work for a lot of people -- my complaint is that unless you know the control panel work around there's no way to set the thing up manually - even when you click the box - let me set my account manually it still needs you to set up an email address - which if the mail servers don't exist in the outlook database it errors out with can't connect and you are hosed.

A possible get around is to enter say some sort of micky mouse gmail type of address and then get into change mode but that sort of nonsense shouldn't be necessary either.

I can understand Ms wanting to remove the old versions of office and license it centrally via click2run -- also combats piracy - no bad thing considering office was one of the most pirated piece of software on the planet - but they should check that it works - or this will cause a lot of grief especially to those who will still use the last "in house" version of Office -- Office 2019 before click2run becomes the only versions available together with Office/365.

    cheers

Just tried to setup Outlook in Offiice 2019 Pro Plus. Got the new setup menu. Clicking the box for manual setup does nothing until you actually enter an email addrees in the box. You can't progress any further.
I didn't check the manual setup box and entered my ISP e-mail. It auto setup for imap when what I want is POP. Once it was setup I couldn't find no way to change it to POP. It wasn't obvious with what little was displayed in the setup window?
Wouldn't let me delete the acount either, not without creating another default pst file.
Basically had to start over and do the manual setup, still not sure if it actually works though? All I've gotten so far is the test message. Will have to go in and double check the settings, some were still auto entered as near as I can tell.

Had to go in via control panel to check all the port numbers etc. I reset them to the defaulta as that is waht is in use on this PC that Outlook is working on. Just got a reply e-mail from Ten Forums on that PC so I guess its working.
This is a big step backwards IMHO. They have basically cripled any kind of manual non standard custom install options.
