Hi Filip, Would you be able to check something for me? I've had the same problem (its a one of the KB updates causing it) so I reverted back to the W8.1. The slow opening was bad but the worst thing was that I was unable to get external data using MS query (Excel just stopped everytime). Can you please check if this is working now? Get External Data -> From Other Sources -> From Microsoft Query. After clicking this command Excel just stopped (didn't display any window):/ Thanks
Hi, I will check it later today when I get to my home computer.
Thanks a lot for the Cortana tip!
This issue was diving me crazy, it took around 7 secs for any excel file to open if I double click on it (without Ms. Excel being open) or if I open it from my Ms. Outlook. I disabled Cortana (from the Cortana settings), and restarted. Problem solved!

I am from China. I find the perfect solution. ie, you don't have to disable Cortana.
1. Change the (default) value of the following key:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.12\shell\Open\command]
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.8\shell\Open\command]
to:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office15\EXCEL.EXE" "%1"
2. Remove or backup the command subkey
3. Remove or backup the ddexec key
Thanks Vickylily for your input:) Certainly there is something wrong with these values. I've left the Cortana on but I've changed back the default file format from xlsm to xlsx and it works. So in my situation there is something wrong with HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.SheetBinaryMacroEnabled I suppose...
