change default PDF viewer in MS Edge for PDFs opened by portals

My default PDF viewer in MS Edge IS set to Nuance Power PDF Advanced BUT when a portal opens something that will be viewed as a PDF, it is still view in MS Edge.

I'm believe I am up-to-date on all updates of all programs/apps. if there is anything else anyone needs to know in order to assist me with this, let me know what you need to know.

    Thank you!

It may be something that's hard coded and does not respect your default settings- like clicking on the links on the lock screen, or Cortana originated web searches.
    BUT when a portal opens
    - could you explain that?

Dalchina, by "when a portal opens...," I mean when I am on a vendors website/portal and select a link to open a document. Maybe you are right about it being hard coded and so not respecting my defaults.

    https://cherrycityinteriors.com/wp-c...heet-Vinyl.pdf
    - like this random example..

Similar discussions on this on other threads. Basically such a link will result in the pdf being opened in the browser used to open that link, provided the browser or browser + extension supports pdfs.

Example: I have Nitro pdf reader set as my pdf default.

If I open that link in Edge, the pdf is displayed in Edge. Likewise in Firefox.

Have you set your default PDF reader to Nuance Power PDF Advanced?

Settings>Apps>Default Apps>Choose default apps by file type>scroll down to .pdf on the left side of your screen, then click on the default app (most likely Edge). A list of available PDF reading apps should show up . . . click on your Nuance PDF reader and select it as your default. As you can see, I use Adobe Reader.

Wynona, yes. I believe in Edge that Dalchina's suggestion that there is imbedded code that doesn't respect defaults. I've never had that issue in any other browser. I'll make a "suggestion" to Microsoft. Sometimes they actually do listen.

I've never had a problem with changing my default PDF reader from Edge.

One more trick up me sleeve, Hex!

Try Edge Deflector. It works to make Edge stop butting in when Firefox (or any other browser) is listed as my default; I don't know if it will work for your purpose, but it's worth a try.

Edit: GitHub - da2x/EdgeDeflector: Force Windows 10 to use your preferred web browser instead of Microsoft Edge.

It's the particular case of a URL pointing to a pdf. My earlier comment about being hard coded is not really relevant- I didn't understand the portal reference. There are several threads on this topic, I can't recall any solution.

(Edge Deflector is relevant to Cortana web searches and changing the browser launched, I believe).

Yes, it is, Dalchina, and works quite well. There are other URLs that automatically open Edge that aren't related to Cortana or anything else related to Edge. Edge is stopped from opening those too.

I just threw Edge Deflector out there to see if it might work. It can't hurt to try; the only down side is it just may not work.
