Word document doesn't open directly in Windows 10

    Hello:

Recently, after Windows 10's latest upgrade, I haven't been able to open word documents directly. What I get when I click onto a file is a blank word screen. I now have to go through word itself, find the file and open it up. How can I get Windows 10 to open files anywhere as it had before? Is there a way to get Windows 10 to open my document files directly again? If this is, in fact, an update problem, how can I delete the update. I've tried everything I can think of. Help!

Hi, sorry, I don't know which the latest Win 10's upgrade is for you- people are on different major builds and receive updates and upgrades at different dates and times. So what is your current Windows build (Windows key + R, winver) and what was the latest update (Update History)? Thanks!

Which version of - presumably MS Office- do you have?

Which file types do you have a problem with? (E.g. txt, rtf, doc, docx.....).

Have you tried re-associating those file types with Word? (Change the association, change it back).

And have you tried repairing Office?

If this is, in fact, an update problem, how can I delete the update.
    Updates can (usually) be uninstalled

but feature updates (builds) normally only permit 'Go back to the previous build' within 10 days after upgrading.

System Restore may help (if it works- we deem it unreliable) with updates, but is totally irrelevant for upgrades.

The News section here includes a thread per update per major build, with notes and comments by users. If you know the update you think may have caused that, you can look at that thread, or research generally with your update number, Office build etc.

I have 2016. Your reply answers nothing. Have you ever seen this problem? All I get is a blank word screen. I have to go into the document folder and find it, which wastes a lot of time. ---- Thanks anyhow!

    Thank you for your reply.

Have you actually tried the suggestions I made? Or are you simply looking for an instant and exact free answer?

If you want to explore what's happened to your file associations you might try

As I can't provide you the instant answer you seek, I'll leave you with this. Good luck.

Another possibility is Protected folder access. This should give you notification about accessing protected folders, but can be missed.

Can you save the files, once created, in Documents folder?
Check this setting under Windows defender and security / Ransomware protection
