How do I associate Office 2000 as default to open Office documents

I still use Office 2000 on my machines (judge me!).

I have never had a problem installing or using Office 2000 on a prior machine.

I successfully installed it, and the Compatibility Pack, on a new Win10 laptop. And I can open (say) Word fine, then open .doc and .docx files okay.

But if I click on a .docx file, my machine will try to launch the installed trial version of Office that's on the machine, rather than what I want, which is Word 2000.

If I try to tweak the default app, below is what I get:

That is, I am only given a choice of current Word, or something from the Microsoft store.

How can I force Win10 to open docx files with the correctly-installed version of Word 2000?

Try associating docx as default with a specific exe using rt click Open With, making sure you use More Apps and tick the box at the bottom.

If in doubt see the relevant tutorial.

Why not uninstall the trial Office?

    I figured it out.

Can - Microsoft Community gave me what I needed.

As applied to my specific situation, it looks like:

This solved it. I'd do the same thing to associate Excel 2000 with .xlsx files.

A tip for future use: Office 2007 was the first to use the new format of .docx, .xlsx, etc. For Office 2003 and earlier there was a Compatibility Pack available to allow those older versions working with the newer formats, it's named FileFormatConverters.exe.

Yes, I've used Compatibility Pack - by necessity, and it's on this machine.

Issue was that opening .docx files was forcing me to use the Office current version, and wouldn't let me switch the default app to Office 2000, until I used the method described above.
