Office 2019 Preview

So.... I decided to install this alongside a retail Offfice 2013 to check it out ( call it infinite wisdom, knowing the conflicts different office versions have... LOL)
... anyway the interesting thing is the "free" bit in the version...



(Ignore the blanks I have yet to provide click-2-run functionality in the tool)

and 2nd'ly the perpetual grace period (?oxymoron)... Does this mean there is no expiry like with Insider versions?



Very weired if that is so. It may be piggy-backing on the underlying Office 2013 activation, but the perpetual thing has me flummoxed .

Microsoft also repeatedly stressed that the preview is intended for organizations that plan to buy and deploy the volume licensed version - what the Redmond, Wash. developer dubs the "perpetual" version - when it launches later this year. In other words, businesses running Office applications as part of an Office 365 subscription need not apply. Or bother.

BTW Still huge memory lags in Word 2019

... just saying the perpetual should not include Retail..

Would you recommend installing this alongside your regular office on a main computer?

Since you have only Office 2013 installed, Office 19 may have seen it as a validation point for the installation. That's the only reasoning I can come up with. As for the perpetual grace period, the idea is that businesses will already have a volume license to Office 365; thus, Office should eventually be updated to 19 once it's releasable. I'm an Insider on Office 365 2016, and my subscription updates silently, unless I go to settings and manually update . . . if there is an update.

Does that make sense? I'm not too sure it does to me . . .

Back when testing of Office 365 2016 started, we were told not to have two versions of Office installed; they don't play nice together. However, there were some testers who had two versions work very well together, and some whose systems were flummoxed. So, it appeared at that time that you took your chances. I don't know if this holds true today . . .

Microsoft will take the version of Office 2016 now available to Office 365 ProPlus users - that Office 2016 is different from what's still sold as a one-time purchase of Office 2016 - freeze the code, and call it Office 2019. Not surprisingly, though, even at the launch of Office 2019, Office 365 ProPlus will hold the advantage, Microsoft pledged.


"Office 2019 will include some, but not all, features that have been released through Office 365 since September 2015 (when Office 2016 was released)," the firm said in a support document.

That second paragraph alone will keep me from installing it at this time. I didn't see anything telling me it wouldn't take over my Office 365 2016, so I'm not going to take the chance.

Yup, Wynona ..makes sense.. it's the differentiation between Home and Business... different strokes and all that...

I agree that a previous version needs to be completely uninstalled (including grace keys etc) but in this instance the cool thing was that Outlook got all settings from the existing... no need to set up anything...

Hmmm, I have the ProPlus (E3) version, so maybe I should install it. That said, though, I've had some major issues with Outlook, so maybe I should just wait until it's offered . . .
