Windows 10: Office 2016 install error 1603 after clean install to April update.

  1.    2 Weeks Ago #1

Office 2016 install error 1603 after clean install to April update.

    So I clean installed Windows 10 1803 Build 17134.

Now, when I try to install Microsoft Office 2016, half way through the install process the setups starts rolling back and in the end I get the following error:
    Code:
Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2016 encountered an error during setup

    Screenshot:

And here's what the log file says:
    Code:

I've been having the same issue on my end with any machine running 1803 regardless of clean or dirty install. If it's running 1803 and you try install ANY version of Office it fails with the same error. Here is my thread if you want to see some of the possible solutions they offered, I haven't had a chance to try the two last ones in the thread yet so maybe you'll have some luck.

I spent about 12 hours yesterday troubleshooting this error.
Heck, I even found out which file were causing the error (branding.xml) but I still wasn't able to solve the issue.

Eventually, before going to sleep I clean installed Windows, installed graphic card drivers and before anything else I installed Microsoft Office 2016 and it worked.

On the previous install I installed Microsoft Office last, after I had installed all my other tons of applications. Maybe one of those installs caused an issue.

Ah I see. Yes I got around it by clean installing 1709 and installing Office before allowing updates to carry it up to 1803, but stupidly formatted my USB installer and now I'm stuck with the 1803 installation USB. So when you clean installed you did it with a 1803 USB installation? And then just kept it offline, installed office, then updated? If that's the case I'll give that a go then.

    That is correct.
    Here's what I did.

    1. Clean installed 1803.
    2. Got all the Windows updates.
    3. Installed Graphic card drivers.
    4. Installed Microsoft Office 2016.
    5. Restarted PC after Office install (just to be on the safer side)
    6. Ran Word, worked fine.
    7. Installed all my softwares.

Okay great, I got it figured out for me as well, tested it on three of the systems it was failing on before and it's working for all. I have to do it exactly like this or it doesn't work, which oddly is actually slightly different from how you got it -

    1) Clean install using 1803 USB installer
    2) Don't connect WiFi during or after installation/initial setup
    3) Copy Office installer to the system and run installation
    4) Install drivers and allow Windows to update from there

If I allow Windows to update at all before running the installer it fails, so it may be that cumulative update they released a couple of days ago for 1803 that's screwing it up, not sure.

Sometimes, the way Windows works really surprises me.

Anyway, good to know it's all working out for you now.
