Review Microsoft's advice and make up your mind, 32-bit is still the default install...

    Microsoft Office said:
The 32-bit version of Office is automatically installed unless you explicitly select the 64-bit version before beginning the installation process...

... if your scenarios include large files and/or working with large data sets and your computer is running 64-bit version of Windows, 64-bit is the right choice... ...like enterprise-scale Excel workbooks with complex calculations, many pivot tables, data connections to external databases...

...IT Professionals and developers in particular, should also review the following situations where the 32-bit version of Office is still the best choice for you or your organization...

As I understand it, if you intend to share excel workbooks with others, 32-bit is the most compatible.

I looked into this recently and concluded the 32 bit version is best unless you are processing extremely large Word/Excel files.

64 bit operating systems and applications were never about improved performance, although that is often an indirect result.

The primary reason why 64 bit operating systems were developed was a larger private virtual address space. Modern operating systems provide an address space (what applications see as memory) that is much larger than and quite independent of actual RAM size. With 32 bit operating systems each process has an address space of 2 GB. Understand that each process has their own private address space that is not shared with others. This is totally independent of how much RAM you have. For many applications this 2 GB address space is very confining and developers had to create some very imaginative way of coping. But this could only go so far.

In early 64 bit systems this address space was increased to 8 TB, 4096 times larger. Starting with Windows 8.1 this was further increased to 128 TB, 65536 times larger than the 2 GB of a 32 bit OS. This provides huge benefits to applications working with large amounts of data. Some things that were previously very difficult if not impossible become simple. Application developers could work with data in ways that were convenient for the application instead of trying to cram everything into 2 GB. This often improves performance.

But not all all applications will benefit. Applications with modest data requirements will often see little or no benefits. And 64 bit applications usually consume more disk space and require more RAM to operate efficiently. For technical reasons a 64 bit application can in some cases be slower than a 32 bit version.

In some cases a 32 bit application is preferred over a 64 bit version. Some applications, such as browsers and Microsoft Office, have numerous third party extensions that are 32 bit only. With a 64 bit applications these can not be used. For compatibility reasons I believe Microsoft is still recommending a 32 bit version of Microsoft Office unless you have requirements that can only be met with a 64 bit version. This situation is changing but the issues remain.
