excel email attachments convert to PDF

Excel files received as excel files convert to PDF when downloaded or opening. I have tried right click and open with Excel and open in browser. Neither works.

I have Windows 10 and Office 2003. I have a Comcast email address and an Office 365 email address.

    Help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Hi ATLBill. Welcome to the TenForums @ATLBill

While I don't have an answer for you I think we need to know what mail client you are using? (Browser (which one), Outlook 2003, Live mail, Windows App, Thunderbird, etc)

I use Office 365 2016, and am pretty good in Excel, Bill. I've never had that problem.

My thinking is that if the Excel file you're getting is from a fairly recent version of Excel (say, 2010 and above) that Excel 2003 can't handle it; thus, the PDF file. Just a WAG.

As Wynona says. Office 2007 and later had their default file formats changed, recognizable by having an x on the extension as in .xlsx or .docx. There is a convertor file downloadable for older versions of Office.
Download Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint File Formats from Official Microsoft Download Center

Why not send yourself a test xls file between your two email accounts and see what happens?

    Hi ALTBill

Unless I missed it you still haven't said what mail client you are using. Could you share please.
