Biography:
My father started A Computerland store in Cody and Riverton here in Wyoming. I worked in the service department in Cody. WE had the smallest computerland store in the Nation.
Things went way south for us when IBM released the patent for its motherboard.
I then moved to Seattle and was fortunate enough to get a Job at GE Computer services and then latter I was employed by Boeing setting up file servers and print servers and gateways.
My mother was an Artist who painted portraits of Native American Dancers. She had a picture frame shop and my father purchased a Encad novajet 36Ē large format printer in hoped to do prints of my mothers Artwork (Deanna Matteson) . It turned out I was the one who did the work with the large format printer. I was always one to use photoshop and it was the one program that I had always set out to learn from its almost beginning of version 2.5. It came on 3.5 inch disks and ran on DOS and one of the first versions of windows.
It beat the death out of the hard drive. The computer was a nightmare to set up. It had 2 scsi adaptors in it a one for the scanner and one for the hard drives. It was a HUGE undertaking to set up windows 95 with all its device drivers and almost impossible without internet access.
Photoshop would crash and get slow and needed re-installed often. So did the whole operating system.
I discovered Seagateís hard drive utilities and Nortin Ghost drive duplicator and it turned out to the ticket to making that part of the business work.
Then I started this business transferring images to deerskin. I came up with a method to transfer images with a large format printer and I used public domain images on deerskin and painted on them. It paid the bills. Then one day I got I email with a virus in it. I was about 5 months in with this business and things were in a fragile place financially. That virus took me down and I lost everything. I did not have a ghost clone of that very critical drive yet. Huge Mistake on my part.
I think its imperative to write a business plan and look ahead for ANY holes that might cause the business to FAIL. One of the holes that needs to be filled is A clone of the computerís hard drive on a separate drive that is known good by plugging it in and booting to it.
I have done all I can think of here to protect our data and pictures at work :
At work I have a drive for data. That drive is cloned to an image by Acronis every night to a second drive. Then I have a 3rd drive that I keep unplugged just in case a virus somehow corrupts all our priceless data. I also have a 4th drive that has a COPY OF the Data Drive with windows copy it took 36 hrs to make. It also has an image of ALL the hds in the Office. WE keep that drive in a cellar in a remote place. This increases the value of this business. It is cheap insurance against fire.
So often backups FAIL to RESTORE and there is no way in the world to test their validity if you use a backup routine that makes these files that cannot be accessed until you restore them and often they donít work and you have to pay the guy who wrote the program a few grand to get him to tell you the information that he should have told you in the instructions of the backup program.!
A backup is not a backup unless you can access and it copy files from it. Computers are devices that keep track of things. They should by all means be able to keep track of themselves. As consumers we need to know how to do this in order to have our businesses survive.
I joined this forum because I am now ignorant to windows 10 and how GPT works and how it keeps track of data. I need to begin learning this
