Upgrade win10 64 pro Version 10.0.10586 Build 10586 to latest version

Because my main Laptop is having a new SSD installed, I am using my spare laptop which was upgraded to win 10 Version 10.0.10586 Build 10586 but has not been used for almost a year. Windows updates keep failing and I am using up lots of data download as it seems to fail and then start all over again. How can I force it to upgrade to the Fall Creators upgrade? I am not very tech savy!

Create a bootable windows 10 iso:
    Download Windows 10

Perform an in place upgrade repair without updates:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Installation Upgrade Tutorials

If you are successful with the in place upgrade repair you can then update.

There is no method to force the upgrade.
These are things that you can do that may improve the likelihood of success:

    1) Uninstall all AV products except Windows defender
    2) Place the computer in clean boot

Critical Service failed trying to update Win10 ver 1511 to ver 1803

I realise that my original post is over six months old now and I had tried everything suggested here and elsewhere and still could not get the win 10 Version 10.0.10586 Build 10586 to update. Yesterday I thought I would have another go and I read online that I could try to update straight to the most recent update 1803 so tried it and now I have a blue screen with a message saying "your PC ran into a problem etc" and referred to "critical service failed". I left it looping but it won't start. I have tried removing the battery and using only the power ( read it might help) but when I restarted it it has the same looping blue screen message. Is there anything I can do to get into safe mode? The laptop is an Asus U36D that came with Win7 Pro and I upgraded it to win 10 without any problems but latest updates go through all the actions of updating but ends up still with ver 1511 until today when this blue screen appeared. It is my spare PC - Can I copy something onto a USB and use it to restart the old one? I am not sure if I should have started a new thread and if this will be read as it is in addition to my first one. I am not very tech savvy.

    1) What is the status of the files on the computer?
    2) Are the files backed up to another drive?
    3) Had a backup image been made with Macrium or other software?
    4) If you needed to perform a clean install would you be able to?
    5) Please update the specs in the "My Computer" section:

System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums | Windows 10 Tutorials
In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.
After clicking it you can find a link a little below that says 'Update your System Spec', click on this link to get to the page where you can fill in your system specs.
System Info - See Your System Specs - Windows 7 Help Forums

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, port replicator, docking station, USB wireless network card, etc.)
    https://www.tenforums.com/profile.php?do=extra

For the next steps find several flash drives > or = 8 GB:

    6) The Windows 10 iso the was created in December 2017 can be used. If it was not made then find a flash drive that you can format ( > or = 8 GB)
    7) Create a bootable Windows 10 iso:
    Download Windows 10
    8) Insert the flash drive into any USB port
    9) Power on the computer and click the applicable keyboard key to boot to the external USB HD
List of PC brands with their corresponding hot-keys
    10) It may take 5 - 10 minutes for the iso to load while viewing the Microsoft Windows icon
    11) Select language, time, currency, and keyboard or click next
    12) In the lower left corner click repair your computer (do not click install)
    13) Click system restore (start with the oldest restore point and repeat the step as necessary until all restore points are used) (if system restore fails or if there are no restore points move to the next step)
    14) Click startup repair (if this fails move to the next step) (look for a message that it has created a srttrail.txt file)
    15) Click command prompt > this should open a black box with title bar: Administrator: X:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe and prompt: X:\Sources>
    16) Insert another USB flash drive into any USB port to be able to move files from the problematic computer to a working computer

For these steps please use a camera or smart phone camera to take pictures and post images into the thread. Comments will be in parenthesis.

    17) bcdedit /enum
    18) bcdedit | find "os device"
    19) C:

    36) select partition 3
    37) detail partition
    38) select partition 4
    39) detail partition
    40) (If there are any additional partitions continue in the current fashion)
    41) select disk1
    42) detail disk
    43) list partition
    44) exit
    45) copy c:/windows/system32/logfiles/srt/srttrail.txt P replace P: with drive letter assign to USB flash Drive that was inserted to move files from the problematic computer to a working computer) (see step #28 results to identify the USB flash drive)
(This is an additional command: copy X:\Windows\System32\logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt "F:")
(replace the letter F with the applicable drive letter)
    46) post the srttrail.txt into this thread
    47) sfc /scannow /offbootdir=M:\ /offwindir=M:\windows (change the drive letter M to the partition drive letter displayed in the results for step #18)
    48) chkdsk /f M: (change the drive letter M to the partition drive letter displayed in the results for step #18)
(reboot when prompted to run the chkdsk command. This may take many hours and typically displays ETA)
    49) (After any reboot > reopen command prompt > administrator: X:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe > X:\Sources>)
    50) bootrec /fixmbr
    51) bootrec /fixboot
    52) bootrec /scanos
    53) bootrec /rebuildbcd
    54) (reboot)
    55) (If the commands are successful to fix the boot consider the repair fragile and perform the following steps:)
    a) Make a brand new restore point
    b) Backup all files to another drive or to the cloud
    c) Make a backup image using Macrium or Acronis or similar software:
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free
    56) (Please make sure to use a camera or smart phone camera to take pictures and post images into the thread.)

Critical Service failed trying to update Win10 - reply

Thank you for your quick and easy-to-follow instructions. I did send a detailed report including a photo but cannot see any record of it here so will start again in case it didn't go. I will answer all the questions soon but started the instructions of restarting the laptop and got to : 45) copy c:/windows/system32/logfiles/srt/srttrail.txt P replace P: with drive letter assign to USB flash Drive that was inserted to move files from the problematic computer to a working computer) (see step #28 results to identify the USB flash drive) BUT could not see the extra USB that I had inserted. It has a light on so assumed that it had registered but as can be seen from attached image only one removable Disk is showing and I know that the one with the Win 10 ISO is 28GB - the other is not as big. Should I exit and start again trying the extra USB drive in another slot? Or can I save the information to the one that has the ISO on as it is 28GB? Sorry my photos all have a reflection but the info is readable. Will only upload the one showing step 28 info.

See if the flash drive can be recognized in file explorer on a working computer.
    Note its size and format.
Then place the drive into the problematic computer.
The txt file once found can be saved to any drive (flash or external HD) as long as the applicable drive letter is placed into the command.
Many of the steps in the prior post can be done out of sequence or after reopening command prompt to continue where you had stopped.

Critical Service failed trying to update Win10 - reply 2

    Thanks again zbook - I think this is going to be beyond me but will keep trying. The Only way I could get two USBs to be recognised was by using a USB hub into one USB 3 slot that I have - neither was recognised in either of the other two USB 2 slots. The copy windows system command returned a "syntax of the command was incorrect" I tried a couple of times - is it because my laptop is a 64 not 32 system? anyway won't try and guess anymore. Will upload the photos - again sorry about the reflections. I have filled in details of my second computer ( the one I am trying to get started again) and here are the replies to your other queries;
    1) What is the status of the files on the computer? The computer is my spare and only used occasionally
    2) Are the files backed up to another drive? all the original data was copied to an external hard drive before I did a clean install of Win 10 when trying to get it to update past ver 1511

    3) Had a backup image been made with Macrium or other software? Yes but when it was new and still Win 7 so no use now.

    4) If you needed to perform a clean install would you be able to? Yes as long as I can get the laptop to restart and install
    5) Please update the specs in the "My Computer" section: Done as best as I can
Usually I use a Microsoft optical Mouse – Model1020 USB ( but not always)
Otherwise occasional USB. As it is on a network I save anything important to a folder on my main Laptop PC so it gets backed up to Carbonite and an external SSD HD. Use WIFI so no LAN cable.

Really appreciate your time and patience. Hope the images are clear enough and we can get over the syntax problem - maybe a typing error ...after midnight here so will look for a possible reply tomorrow morning.

In #4 the files are backed up and a clean install is the most efficient and effective option to get the computer up and running.
The boot files will be new and new drivers will need to be installed from the Asus website.
This should fix all BSOD problems related to software and hardware drivers.
If there is a hardware malfunction causing BSOD this can be found after the clean install.
When upgrading from Windows 7 to 10 this created a digital license.
The clean install should also allow the upgrade to Windows 1803.

If you prefer to troubleshoot a regback method can be checked to see if it can fix the problems (registry backup).
If you need to save any files you can use boot rescue:
Windows 10 Recovery Tools - Bootable Rescue Disk - Windows 10 Forums
Macrium has an option to fix boot: Fix Boot Problems

The troubleshooting steps, if they work, get you back to the current Windows version and build and then you may have the problem with troubleshooting the BSOD and will have the problem troubleshooting the upgrade failure.

So the best option at this time appears to be the clean install.
To perform the clean install make sure that you have the most up to date Windows 10 iso:
    Download Windows 10

In post #4 the computer model was: U36D and in the "My Computer" section it was UX305.
    Please clarify the model.
Open the Asus website > support > enter the computer's product or serial number or model > select the operating system > view drivers > post a URL or hyperlink into the thread

    1) After the iso loads this time click on install instead of repair your computer
    2) Delete all partitions > make an unallocated drive
    3) install the new operating system following the text and images in this link:

Thank you .. I realise I hadn't clicked show second system on 'my computer'. It is all there now. Will read everything and make a decision on whether I am able to follow new instructions, may be easier to get someone more tech savvy to do it for me. I had already done a clean install on the troublesome Laptop Asus U36s which worked well but still wouldn't update past ver 1511. I gave up as it is my spare machine and it all seems rather complicated getting it updated. I would like to get it back up and running so I have a spare but beginning to think it is not worth all the stress. Some laptops are cheaper than paying for a tech to fix this one! I have the latest win 10 downloaded on the 28GB USB. Thanks!
