    Win 10 upgrade

I have switched to Mac about 4 years ago.
Now a friend needs to upgrade from windows 7.
Can I get a windows 10 upgrade and will it work on Win 7?

Hello Mark, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Personally, I prefer a clean install, but yes you sure could upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 without losing anything.

    Thanks you
I would refer a new install too. But she would lose a ton of her work.

You're most welcome. We certainly don't want her to lose anything.

Make sure you back up her data first.

Currently, yes. An upgrade will activate. There's some doubt as to how much longer though. An end date of 31 December has been announced for the free upgrade for Assistive Technologies. It may be that Microsoft intend to turn off all free upgrades at the same time?

do what I did, add an external HDD and copy all your stuff to that. Then when I upgraded, it left a folder in C Drive called windows.old, between the two no problem.

Both my machines in my system specs below were Windows 7 originally. Both upgraded without a problem.

It would be a sensible precaution to make a system image of the original machine to an external HDD first though, just in case.
