    Agree with what @Kyhi posted. Delete partitions 4 & 3 (in that order). Partition 1, "System Reserved", is the active partition - if you widen the data columns in the top half of DIsk Management, active would be shown inside the parenthesis. I can tell it's the active partition because it also says system inside the parenthesis, which means it is the partition BIOS booted which then loaded the partition marked as boot inside the parenthesis - C: Partition 2.

    Once you get one big unallocated space after the C: drive partition, we will create an NTFS partition in it and use dism /apply-image to "install" Windows 10 onto it and then a bcdboot command to add it to the boot menu.

    I have 2 MBR disks and 1 GPT disk..
    As you can see the status is stretched out to see the results...
    Your partition issue came about due to upgrades creating recovery partitions..
    if you do not leave space, the recovery will be kept on the same partition as windows.
    If you install windows it will create another recovery partition..
    So we will apply the windows image to the partition, thus avoid that problem..

    @NavyLCDR I need more room on my backup drives. When I attempted to remove some old backup files, I received this message (never received it before). Can you tell me what it means and how to deal with it?

    You have Image Guardian in Macrium Reflect activated. Either turn it off in the MR options at the top, or delete the file thru MR itself. Explorer will fail if the files are protected by Macrium Image Guardian.

    Thank you F14tomcat . I'm using the newest paid version of Macrium Reflect and am not used to the new controls.

    No problem Nisko. It's a spooky looking message, but easy to rectify. :)

    @NavyLCDR @Kyhi

    OK, I'm ready to perform the clean install on my C: drive after I make it all unallocated space. I have two fresh Macrium images of the C: and D: drives (I strongly believe in backups). FYI: I never install a new BIOS with anything attached to my PC. As for Partition numbers, am I correct in saying that you count the partitions from left to right to identify them, i.e., Partition 3, etc.?

    I have to admit that I'm a little confused by your instructions on what to do next. I realize that the instructions are in the posts, but I believe they are separated by steps. If you folks don't mind, please post a fresh version of them so I don't screw up. I have a flash drive with a recent version of Windows 10 which contains redstone 3 (the Fall Creator's Update, I believe). Can I use that to install the new Windows 10?

    I thought that all the tools were in the icons on the Desktop of the PE DVD. I didn't realize that there were more tools under the hood. I also have three copies of the PE environment (backups again).

    OK, as soon as you post the instructions, I'm ready to go. If I have to go back to previous posts, I'll figure it out. Attachment 165555Thanks, folks!!!

    @f14tomcat

    Since now I know you use the new Macrium Reflect, I have a question. Should I use the incremental function or not. I've heard that tagging on increments can be dangerous to the backup if something goes wrong - so, I have always used full backups with no increments. But backing up with increments would be much faster. I also always use the check function even though that takes time. I could never afford to have a faulty backup. What's your opinion? Thank you..........

    @Nisko, it boils down to how you want to use it. I do full image backups 99% of the time, with verify. I do use the incremental on occasion...I'll explain. If I have just recently done a full, and I'm getting ready to install something I'm not really familiar with, or a new graphics driver, or anything that has a higher chance of glitching, I will fire off an incremental. Takes about 30 seconds. In this sense I'm sort of using the incremental as a checkpoint or Restore Point (not literally, of course). I have never had any issues with incremental, but the world is not perfect, and I'm sure some have had a bad experience. Others will advise using differential backups, but I've never used them. Incrementals are quite small compared to a full image, while differentials can grow quite large over time until the next full image. Part 4 of Kari's tutorial explains Incremental vs differential.

    It's really a matter of choice, and how you know you use your machine, and what types of changes you make on a regular basis. Any of the methods keep you safe, which is the whole idea of doing backups. If you haven't already, read thru the full tutorial.

    Boot the computer from the Windows 10 installation USB flash drive. When you get to the first screen, press Shift + F10, a command prompt window should open. Run:
    diskpart
    select disk 0
    clean
    exit
    exit

    Then proceed with the install. After you select custom install, highlight the unallocated space on disk 0 and click next.
