    I did not know that it made a difference, regardless of what system you`re running.

    If that`s the case then I suppose he could just use Rufus to create the USB installer, once he downloads a fresh Iso file.

    He's already got the ISO and Rufus only run in Windows.

    It would work provided there's a version running in LINUX. This version still run under Windows.

    Here's the steps:
    Boot up Linux mint. Open a terminal and type:

    su - root ===> enter password
    lshw ===> list of devices: hd's, cd, usb etc... and look for the dev id of the USB ex: /dev/sdd
    fdisk /dev/sdd =====> assuming your USB is /dev/sdd
    a =====> mark Active
    1 ===> Partition 1 is selected
    w =-==> Update
    When I type the dev id of my USB (dev/sdb) I get this:

    "
    Welcome to fdisk (util-linux 2.27.1).Changes will remain in memory only, until you decide to write them.Be careful before using the write command./dev/sdb: device contains a valid 'udf' signature; it is strongly recommended to wipe the device with wipefs(8) if this is unexpected, in order to avoid possible collisionsDevice does not contain a recognized partition table.Created a new DOS disklabel with disk identifier 0x31e509cb.Command (m for help):
    "

    And when I type in the a next it says no partition defined yet.
