Have you tried doing a clean boot then run MCT?
Yes, msconfig and reboot more than once!

One last idea. Boot to Safe Mode with Networking and try MCT from there.

No use, looks like this laptop will stay on 8.1!

Many reports of people clean installing 8.1 then immediately upgrading to 10 successfully.
Means you would have to backup your data first though. Image backup would be the best way to go.

Thanks, I have managed to get a USB via someone else s PC. I will not be able to try this for a few days as my wife is a bit upset with how long I have spent doing this and we do have a lot one in the next two weeks!
But I suspect I may have the same problems, if so I was thinking of doing a refresh as if that worked it would be a lot quicker than having to rebuild my laptop as its used for photo graphics with a lot of programs. Does any one know if this has worked, running the USB as soon as the original refresh is done rather than doing all the updates first?

But its created a 32bit install so back to the start again!

You have to successfully do an upgrade and activation first then you can boot the DVD or flash drive to do a clean install.

I have seen that the USB installer is more successful than the ISO/DVD. Using a USB installer to do the upgrade fixed my install woes. Good luck!

Total failure the new 64bit USB didn't run at all just as the creator. Looks like 8.1 on this laptop

Did you get the error code from a dialog or did you see it in setuperr.log? My log was full of those errros for different reasons and eventually I found the line about my install.esd not being copied. That log has a ton of info in it if you haven't gone through it yet
