No I do not mean boot from USB as that start the process where you could do a clean install. I meant navigate to the USB drive, say drive G:, find the setup exe and double click.

If you think your drive is causing issues you could run a check with Seatools by Seagate.

That's what I was thinking when I found out that was the issue. Time to reformat my USB stick again I guess! (To put the dos version in if windows detects bad sectors)

(Earlier, I tried to install an update (that's not 1709) and it failed, and when I tried to update my audio driver it also failed. Possibly linked to a CRC error)

If you think you have bad disk, and I may be repeating myself, my apologizes, backup data.

Gives you a great reason to buy a brand new shinny SSD.

Sorry for tlate reply. Running sea tools long generic test gives a fail after a few seconds.

Rufus doesn't recognize the included ISO. The bad thing is all my UWPs have updated and I can't use them anymore. Fix all is only for sea gate drives only. I have a western digital hdd. What do I do?

Ps I have an 300gb external hdd for bakup purposes. Half of it is hfs+

Okay you have you data backed up. So that is out of the way.

Now you need to buy a new drive.

Then follow this tutorial to get software, create USB and install. During the install you will be asked for Windows 10 licensing key. Skip it. You machine was running 10 so it will activate on its own.

    Clean Install Windows 10

Glad you had backup, lots don't.

Time to save up for a new drive, it seems. External and internal. (And a casing for my current drive.) Time to hold off. I'll report back when I do this, or I have installed the update.

    Keep us posted.

Myself I do not like those packaged little external drives. They are cheaper for the space but I keep seeing failures her.

I like the standalone enclosure and the raw disk you install. Some external unit are like a dock, letting you slide a drive in and then eject it.

Okay, it's been three weeks. The only significant thing that happened within the timeframe between the last reply and this one is...

1709 finally appeared in Windows Update.

And it failed to install. This decision is already set in stone: looks like I'm going to have to miss out on any feature updates until I get a new HDD/SDD.

    Ouch.

Did you get any messages with the failure.

    This article may help.

Certainly some of the items to check under Quick Fixes.

Ok it has been a long while, but I'm going to give upgrade another shot. I think the CRC error is due to corrupt files (I don't know, haven't run an sfc), so I'll try a refresh (the one where your files are kept but not apps).

If it doesn't work it's time to refresh...
