Update-over 20 hours and the Windows patch update was still looping and failed. Only option was to do a hard computer restart 😳 restarted and prompt said it was a failed restart and downloaded the patch again. Took over another couple hours. Fortunately I didn’t have to do a complete computer restore from the failed windows update! I got lucky. Not a way I like to manage updates and seems a poor launch. If it’s not ready for the market why would windows say I have an update available in the first place? My only guess is to let it’s customers beta test it at the expense of the UX. This really leaves yet another bad taste in my mouth for windows and speaks volumes as to why I should switch to a MAC.

If the update process is in the download stage, terminating it should not pose a problem. However, after that I would not terminate it. I have an i7 with 8 cpu's, and the installation took about 45 minutes from start to finish.

If you want/need the FCU that bad, just download the ISO file make a dvd or usb installer and do a clean install.

After download hung at 94 %, I found it restricted by the time window. Had never seen this before. I think I just extended the time from 7p to 11p.

Download completed, install started and went through a few restarts appeared to be progressing normally.

But I've been watching the progress wheel for more than 12 hours since. I'm not prepared for any repair procedure so can't risk interrupting.

What is the longest time I should wait expecting a positive outcome?

    Hi Mike1951.

I'd think you are there. 12 hours is a long time.

Do you have a back up of your data?

Do you access to another computer?

It's just that I struggle with things I used to know how to do.

Earlier this week, I plugged in a 2TB external and copied an image. Also, created a recovery disc. But I tried to eject it and nothing happened (no button on drive) and the eject option no longer appears. DVD drive no longer appears. See why I want to avoid issues?

Edge was the original problem in 1703. Settings would lock up, browser would randomly close. 1709 was said to have a repair function Incorporated. BTW, I'm an old hard head that only uses a local account, so I won't access anything that requires a MS login.

    Will keep watching..

The wheels on the bus go round and round.....

Hey, I hear you. Pretty much all the Windows have a repair function.

I'm cool with a local account but I always install two admins. The second admin is for the case where the first gets messed up. Second set of keys to the car.

I hope you used Macrium Reflect for that image. Windows Image can be touchy. I also prefer a simple data backup for my data, just easier to deal with instead of getting it out of an Image.

When you get tired shoot the wheels out from the bus.

Everyone needs a data backup , an Image and bootable media. Windows has a function called recovery drive which creates. Then there is always new media from from Media Creation Tool.

I know MS thinks this is a perfect process but they should warn people, this is an OS upgrade!! Have these tools !!

    Keep us all posted.

At about 36 hours, I tried Ctrl-Alt-Del and then just powered off. When powered on, showed "attempting to recover installation".

    Then, "working on updates 30%...

Back to where I was two days ago. Hopefully, it will recover and install properly,

    Thanks for the assistance.
