    Yes you could do that.

I know you may not like this idea but I think at this point it is one way to go that will yield an excellent go forward base. Of course you make the final decisions after considering pros and cons.

Copy all you data out and perform a clean install or maybe do an install from the recovery partition (think it is older Win 10) and then redo the update to 1709 with a USB key.

Myself, I would do a clean install and then reapply the software from HP that you want / need. Just checking their site and it has a pretty good list, can't say complete as I have nothing to compare to. I think device came with McAffee and I'm not sure where you are in that trial period of if you even used it.

Typing this has me thinking, should you try the updates again, disable or better yet uninstall McAffee. Ensure you know how to get it back in, I don't think they gave you disk.

I make this recommendation as something is not right. How is that for stating obvious. I've updated a dozen machines, some built for XP and haven't had the issues you've had.

We may have discussed this but does SFC/SCANNOW run clean.

    Thoughts?

I will see what happens at 2.30 the time I scheduled, but I would have thought I would see a restart and update option somewhere.... Just running SFC

I do have Macrium so maybe use that and restore the c drive from Monday (pre update) would that work? and would it be just the c drive I need to restore or all the hard disk :)

Is there a place to check if a restart is pending?

You could restore to Monday but I don't think that we change how the update is processed next time.

On your update screen it should say restart now or you could click start and power icon. It will say update and restart. Of course you could just restart.

In update it just states up to date, and the power button the normal 3 options, although when I postponed it did say update and shut down and update and restart but they disappeared... very odd...

I have a feeling at 2.30 it will do nothing but the update seems to have disappeared... would I be safe running disc cleanup and removing the windows old and intallation files, then maybe reset windows update?

it is the FALL UPDATE 1709 so i downloaded it which took literally only 5 minutes at most.
It took my MCT 55 minutes altogether to download it on 10-Mbps broadband and create the media on Pentium G3240.

    Myself I wouldn't delete. I love rename.

You most certainly can reset updates. You have that Macrium image in your back pocket. Again, you've tried this update several times without success. SFC runs clean and unless some else says this is cause I believe the outcome will be the same.

Matthew pointed out he did his from USB key. I think you tried that as well although it would be worth trying again. In BIOS shut off secure boot and fast boot.

2.30 nothing as expected, so I manually checked for updates, found the 1709 update...again, started preparing to install.. ran the Windows update troubleshooter which said we made changed to rectify an issue, and rather than take hours to prepare it is now at 80% after about 5 mins.. although it is staying at that lol

See what happens when it stated restart... do not hold much hope
