When is the last time you ran
sfc /scannow
What AntiVirus product are you using and have you run something like Malwarebytes from malwarebytes.com?

Ran it prior to fixing it (SFC).
McAfee was installed but it expired so removed that and using windows defender now
So SFC is clean.
Could you try the process again but run as Administrator, right click exe, run as Administrator.
Then if that doesn't work please run Malwarebytes from Malwarebytes.com

AT LAST !!!!!
Well I decided to remove the 1709 update from the hide updates section of the Windows Update Troubleshooter ..
Took almost 3 hours from start to finish but now on 1709
One issue I have found the Cortana search box has gone white any ideas how to change it back?
No idea why it did not work before, unless the troubleshooter did in fact fix an issue...

I would use the small icon. It still works, just doesn't take up so much space. Right click in clear area of Task Bar, top of menu is Cortana.
Excellent news that yours worked. The wonders of Windows !! LOL
May do that, have a couple of issues with the installed HP software, HP Coolsense Icon missing from taskbar and does not open from control panel, and HP 3D drive guard missing..
Nothing major...
With HP printers get the latest software from their site. Uninstall existing printer and power them down. Install software and when requested by installation power on printer. Should be no issue. There is a glitch somewhere, had to re-install a couple of HP and brother printers recently.
You can get driveguard driver from HP. I had to install on six hp probooks. Used the Windows 7 driver. No issues.
Not familiar with Coolsense. I would head to HP and get latest software.
Hi
So, everything seemed to go well apart from the HP 3D guard and the HP Coolsense which the driver/app update does not seemed to have fixed, I can get the HP Coolsense icon back but after a restart it disappears again so I have asked on the HP forum... Do not hold much hope..
I have found two more mnor issues, one a failed update to an app, and a few missing icons as shown below..
Any idea how to fix? The Outlook icon is on the taskbar, just missing from the "what to show on taskbar"
Looking at the log it has installed...

On 3d guard go to hp.com and follow the links to support and then to drivers and download. Key in your machine and find the driver. Download and install, usually a double click.
What is Coolsense? Does it provide value? You might also find an updated version while picking up 3D guard.
On the icons I would check again tomorrow. On a number of installs I did, granted they were all the same machine, the icons appeared as little down arrows.
If that does not restore then you must search out icon threads in forum. There are lots. One solution you see a lot is the icon cache rebuild. I have not been following so they may be a published working fix.
Another member reported a failed update that was successful. We proved it was successful as it was specific to the os Build number and it was installed.
I'm not sure if Microsoft should slow down the release schedule and up the testing period. Not that they are alone, Apple is having a hell of a time with the iOS. This constant need to release to attract / keep customers so you can report positively to shareholders comes at a cost. Of course if you follow the way updates are delivered MS decided the Home edition users will be the testers before it hits corporate.
