re-installing Windows 10, error 0xC1900101 - 0x20017: bad drivers?

I had two hard drives installed on my computer and one of them died on me. I couldn't even boot up any longer but I had backed up all my data, so I was not too worried.

Anyway, I had the free Windows 10 install upgrade from Windows 8. I was unable to get my computer to boot up with a USB key so I ended up installing Windows 8 again since I have the CD.

The version I have is a Japanese version which is a major pain as my Japanese is very limited. I'm only including this information in case it is part of the problem.

The install went smoothly and I have it up and running. I downloaded the Media center to upgrade my computer once more and it seemed to go smoothly until the very end. I ended up with an error message:

• 0xC1900101 - 0x20017 I clicked on the link provided which says that:
• I don't have enough disk space
• Or one of my device drivers is bad.

The only thing that I can think of is my WAN key. I have a wireless USB key plugged in to supply internet. It stopped working when I first installed windows 8 and I had to go their homepage and execute a program with installed the proper drivers. So, it works with Windows 8 now.

It's the latest set of drivers, so I don't know if that is actually the problem but it seems to be the only thing that I can think of.

Is there anyway to setup Windows without an internet connection if this is the case?

I'm open to any suggestions.

'junobugs' i've had more or less the same error message the THREE times i've tried to install 16299.15 - twice using Windows Update, third mounting an .iso. My error is 0xC1900101 - 0x30017.

I checked the event logs from the install - it mentioned my Realtek Audio driver needed upgrading - it seems like it installed it but when the system was rolled back, i had the older version of the driver.

I d/l'd the latest version & installed it so i would lean in your case to it being driver(s) in need of updating.

Cause
A driver has caused an illegal operation.
Windows was not able to migrate the driver, resulting in a rollback of the operating system.
This is a safeOS boot failure, typically caused by drivers or non-Microsoft disk encryption software.

Mitigation
Ensure that all that drivers are updated.
Open the Setuperr.log and Setupact.log files in the %windir%\Panther directory, and then locate the problem drivers.

The log files should identify precisely which driver is at fault.

I haven't had a chance to do any work on my computer these past few days, but when I get the chance, I'm going to remove the wireless LAN key that I believe is causing the problem and use an older one that used to work.

The reason I changed in the first place is that the original one doesn't work with Windows 10, but it works well enough to install the upgrade. At that point, I will need to remove it and use the newer one.

As for suggestions to use the latest drivers, that won't help as I already did that. Also, the drivers aren't installed in the normal sense, but rather through the manufacturer's original software. Using hardware that has been developed with languages other than English is a real pain, especially one like Japanese where they use a completely different set of characters. Wish me luck!

Uninstalling the software would seem to be the way to go then...

Yes. First use the Media Creation Tool to make install media as an ISO file or a bootable USB. Without an internet connection you'll need to untick 'check for updates (recommended)' when running the Setup.

Thanks for all the tips! I am planning to do exactly that. I forgot to bring my blank DVD to burn a copy of the update. I don't use DVDs that much anymore so I don't have a handy stock of them. I can't do the USB key thing because I think my computer is too old for that. I tried to boot up my computer with an USB option, but that option simply does not exist in my BIOS. Anyway, once I get all my stuff together, I'll be doing all this.

UPDATE:
So far, no luck. I'm really busy, so that's why it's taking so long. Anyway, I tried removing the drivers for the LAN and I even removed the LAN altogether, but I when I tried installing with DVD, it wouldn't work.

Maybe it's another driver? Is there anyway to tell which driver is causing the problem?

To determine the problematic driver post the sometimes hidden Panther logs using a one drive or drop box share link.
Open file explorer > view > check hidden files
Search for these logs:

It may take a while to troubleshoot the logs and find the problematic driver.
Sometimes it may not be found.
Other times it can be quick if we don't have to decipher codes.
