I am tired of installing Windows and then spending the rest of the day while the pc goes through all the updates. I was hoping the media creator tool would do this but there is no mention of updates.
Yes it will download the latest version of windows, but not every update, nothing will do that.
If you are tired of installing windows, just make images.
If you download a fresh copy of Media Creation Tool it will pull the latest version but not all the updates. However since the main update to Windows 10 is a Cumulative Update it should bring W10 up to date with one update. I believe it will ask during install if you want updates and it will pull the latest CU before installing.

Thanks. I am buying a new laptop so need to install from scratch. This whole windows update thing seems be a problem. I have two pc's that haven't been updated for 5 months and it has take 3 days to get them both up to date. They kept getting stuck or showing errors. The PC I use all the time has been ok because updates are installed regularly.
If, for example, a PC uses the previous major build- let's say the Anniversary edition, and when you use it you are them offered the Creator's build, then you may be faced with two major downloads, each of several Gb. This will typically apply from about a month after the first public release of the major build (in this case, the Creator's).
One is the Creator's build itself, the other is the latest cumulative update.
The first requires a procedure very similar to Windows installation for the upgrade, whilst the second, for the update, doesn't.
If your download speed is limited, that may add to this.
Bear in mind MS's model is that updates and upgrades are applied as delivered. (However you can get considerable control of this).
The advantage of this model is that periodically you get a whole clean OS, (albeit with possible registry corruption related to your user profile and installed programs, for example). Further, repairing the OS, with a minimum of updates, is also feasible.
However, as you say, there can be various reasons for experiencing problems in applying upgrades and updates and these can be hard to resolve.
I don't have a clue what build I have and to be honest I don'r really care. I thought the whole idea was to set the update to automatic and let windows do it's stuff so we could get on with our work. Having spent three days getting two of my seldom used pc's up to date through dozens of errors I have just discovered my main PC is been failing the latest update.
I will give the media creation tool repair installation a try though even though it sounds a bit drastic.
Starting from that viewpoint, I think there's little I can do to help you.
I will just say this, then leave you to it.
You have to be defensive-
1. Use the features available so yo don't get unexpected restarts following an update- which is the default case if you don't do anything.
2. Some people find problems occur when major build changes happen. You need to be prepared and aware.
3. Whilst this is supposed to be a consumer product, it's just not that simple. You are forced to be technically aware.
4. As part of being defensive, you need a sound backup strategy, typically including disk imaging.
5. If you understand the update process, you can organise your backup strategy better.
6. You can control updates- by default they do just happen. Maybe when you just don't want them to.
The tools and means are there. But I doubt you'll invest in them to protect yourself, your PC and your data. I wish you the best of luck,
Thanks for your help. I am a retired Microsoft Systems Engineer so I will be able to sort it out. However the simple fact is it is sold as a consumer project and I would have though 80% of users (wild guess) have very little knowledge of computers. I will create a repair install to hopefully sort the problem but every single person I know has a computer but none of them would have a clue how to do that. They will probably have no idea that their computer is failing updates which I assume means their computers will have serious security faults.
