Media Creation tool and $Windows.~BT - relationship?

Awaiting downloads on both insider build 10240 and Windows 8.1, I decided to run the Media Creation Tool (see Windows 10 ISO Download - Windows 10 Forums ) on each machine to be ready for a clean install after activation.

On both systems a folder in the root was created called $Windows.~WS, before the final Windows.iso was created in a folder of my choosing. $Windows.~WS (WS - Windows Servicing, or Windows Setup, perhaps) contains both sources\Installx86.esd and a nested Windows\sources\Install.wim windows images. The Windows folder containing the install.wim seems to be identical with the contents of the final windows.iso.

Both systems use my MSA as login, so odd things happen such as: I change the theme on Windows 10 and the same theme appears on Windows 8.1.

Now in both cases, a Windows.~BT folder was created after the Media creation tool had finished, and I am not sure whether this was coincidental or a consequence of running the Media Creation tool. After a couple of hours very little progress has occurred apart from a \sources folder containing a Panther folder and a SetupPlatform.ini

On Windows 10 I have agreed to receive updates from more than one place, but I do not think there is such an option on Windows 8.1, is there? I am assuming that these hidden folders may be used for the peer to peer distribution of Windows 1o upgrades?
