    No go upgrade

Hi. I have just got a new laptop with win 8.1 on it. For some strange reason it will not upgrade to win 10. It is a HP 15-G036AU LAPTOP - AMD QUAD CORE + 1TB HDD + 8GB RAM + WINDOWS 8.1. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

First screen says Getting ready. second says working on updates and third says restoring to your previous version of windows. My previous laptop was a less specced HP and it upgraded fine

I have tried the latest ISO and another ISO i have had for six months. This last time was done online with the MS upgrade assistant online. Same result with all 3.

Try again from the iso and make a note of the error codes it reports. Then look at this reference to find out what they mean and what steps you can take to resolve them.

If the upgrade process is not successful, Windows Setup will return two codes:

    • A result code: The result code corresponds to a specific Win32 error.
    • An extend code: The extend code contains information about both the phase in which an error occurred, and the operation that was being performed when the error occurred.

For example, a result code of 0xC1900101 with an extend code of 0x4000D will be returned as: 0xC1900101 - 0x4000D.

Note: If only a result code is returned, this can be because a tool is being used that was not able to capture the extend code. For example, if you are using the Windows 10 Upgrade Assistant then only a result code might be returned.

I remember the first time the code was ??????? followed by something to do with a driver error. I will try again with the latest ISO and let you know. Thanks all for your help to this point. I might add someone said something in relation to legacy settings in the BIOS. Forgot what that was about though.

Ok. Started the install, went online for updates, got to 35% install. Went and got a coffee, came back to Restoring your previous version of Windows. No error codes, nothing.

You can clean install Windows 10 and activate it with the Windows 8 Product Key.

Just make an image of 8.1 before you do a clean install, just in case it doesn`t work :)
