If you need 64 bit, best to consider a new or at least newer PC that is 64 bit.

Post #5 suggests that the machine has two 2GB DIMMs installed. Is that correct? I wonder whether that is an approved configuration. I have the impression from a quick web search that the largest officially supported DIMMs are 1GB, and that you'd need 4 to max out the RAM. (No, I'm not suggesting buying 4 X 1GB DDR2, although I could do that for $20 in the US.)

Bobkn - thanks for reminding me of Memtest. I last used this when I believed I had memory problems on a previous PC.

The memory configuration in my machine is actually 4 slots each containing a 1 GB DIMM and I believe is an approved configuration.

Memtest ran to completion and reported no problems, I'm happy to report.
