Yes I have tried Winkey-P and Fn+ext monitor key gives the same result. Thanks anyways.
This my fifth time has one slight difference. Before nothing I would do made any difference. Now I mouse clicked the Windows 10 install window and it's gone paler blue with "Windows 10 Setup (Not Responding)". Grrrrrr
When trying the Winkey + P route it maybe worth activating first the Narrator tool as someone suggested in another thread using Windows key + spacebar, just to check are in the right menu and it reads out Select Screen 2. May have to get past a password box first which Narrator may clarify although I set my Win 7 not to have a password to avoid that possibility before upgrading.

I was in wrong menu somehow, but when Narrator confirmed I was in the Video menu and selected Screen 2 the display sprung to life on an HP TM2 1010EA which has HDMI out. Although Windows 10 seemed to have swapped the outputs, the HDMI screen itself did not show anything.

After got Win 10 working, went into Control Panel via Windows key plus X to disable the ATI Radeon 4550 driver to force it to use the generic Intel driver on board. Reboot since have been fine.

I don't have a password either and I tried the four different display/monitor options and nothing worked.

Have you tried pressing Winkey+P then press the down arrow 3 times and hit Enter? If the output is going to a non-existent screen that "MAY" switch it back.

Also, your laptop should have Fn key you can press to switch between onboard and external display.
I didn't down arrow; I just tried all the options by clicking on them. The last took me to a blank screen so went back to first choice.

Here's a solution I found on laptop - Black screen with cursor after successful Windows 10 upgrade - Super User

I found the answer. It was because I had installed OldNewExplorer before to modify which folders display in "My Computer" and I think it was to bring back libraries in Win 8.1.People have reported problems when explorer has been modified by things such as ClassicShell etc. Anything that modifies explorer may break the Win10 upgrade.
I uninstalled OldNewExplorer and the upgrade completed successfully.

I've noticed what the problem was for me with windows 7 its the drivers of the intel HD and nvidia's colliding now I fixed it on windows 7 where I disabled the intel graphics but I am guessing when I try to install 10 at a point in time it enables them again. Anyone have any idea on how to get around this. I was thinking of enabling the intel drivers again switching my hdmi to the motherboard and doing the install and than switching them again after but that's alot of reboots and work so I am wondering if anyone else figured this out.

Where you able to resolve this?

I believe I am having the same issue, in fact the issue began a few weeks back and the resolution was to disable the HD4000 onboard driver - obviously this fix is only a bandaid and now trying to install Windows 10 appears as you say to enable this disabled driver and kill the display..

Just got mine to work too. Not sure which it was but I freed up some more disk space and uninstalled Avast. I'm now running on Win10 just fine.

What about us poor sods who don't get the cursor. Mine goes through the install flawlessly until "Updates" followed by "making a few changes" then Hasta La Vista Baby; that's all she wrote; blank dark blue screen. Nothing will move it from there. I've messed around with all the supposed solutions here with the exception of plugging another monitor into the laptop, as I don't have VGA monitor.

i had the black screen issue when i was trying to upgrade via windows 10 iso + bootable usb. what i did was mount the iso using poweriso, inspected the contents of the iso and clicked setup. the upgrade went smoothly at first try using the mounted iso method. it took like 2-3 hours because i chose to keep all apps and files.

So I solved my own problem, here's what I did:

-Msconfig and disabled everything from startup.
-turned off most unnecessary windows components.
    -disabled antivirus from starting.
    -disabled malwarebytes from starting.

However I am taking a guess that the only step that made a difference was stoping the antivirus (Eset In my case) as it appears to block changes to the file system; turning it off in Msconfig required turning off the intrusion detection system and a restart - it would just re-enable itself otherwise.

So I'm all good with all my files intact.
This upgrade was performed via the setup.exe on the machine (no external media used). The screen did go black/blue without a cursor for about a minute or two and then began driver installs. 👌😋

What if you get a black screen during the upgrade process itself? I've tried 2 times on an Acer Aspire Z5801 PC with no luck.

It'll get to about 54% overall completion (the part where it installs drivers/features) and then the screen will suddenly turn black. They'd be some HDD activity for a while before going quiet, with the screen covered in blackness (it's a bit lighter than fully black because it's on obviously).

I'm forced to power off the machine by holding the power button. This just results in the computer going through a reboot loop as it tries to recover the installation. Eventually it gives up and decides to revert back to Windows 7. It would also get stuck on the "ACER" boot screen as well (the first thing I see upon powering up the PC - it's unresponsive in this state and requires a power off).

I don't think compatibility is the issue here because I successfully managed to install Windows 10 on a PC that is MUCH older with inferior hardware (that ran into no problems), yet a newer PC with more capable hardware is struggling? I don't get it.
