ALIENWARE X51 SOLUTION(unsure if works for others)

This took a while looking through this forum but one solution finally worked. With my alienware x51 it kept going to a black screen with only my cursor. It appears that Windows 10 assumed I had multiple monitors which is why you can't see the log in screen but it is there! The solution in this case was:
    1) press Windows key + P (don't press the plus sign)
    2) press the down arrow three times
    3) press enter
    The login screen should appear!
You'll most likely have to fix an issue with resolution once it finishes which of course can be fixed by going to display settings and resetting it to the correct resolution. Idk why it feels like it has multiple monitors but this seems to be the issue.
Edit: I went into display settings and there is a way to set multiple displays to show only one. This will fix resolution issues.

I'm using a all in one windows 7 computer at about 80 % computer reboots to just a black screen no cursor. After leaving it for a few hours and nothing happening I restart it and it tries to recover the update but ends up reinstalling win 7

Anyone know what I should do?

I have a laptop, no external monitor. After upgrading from Win7, screen went black without cursor, but I noticed the icons are barely visible on the screen. The backlight was off! I clicked the hotkeys to increase the brightness and at around 60% the screen turned on.

So my advice is try setting the brightness to maximum.

(If you see the cursor, of course, your case is different).

Hey guys I think I have found a solution:
Now this problem is most likely happening because you have multiple monitors. This was also happening to me and here is how I fixed it: When the black screen appears the login screen should originally appear but due to a bug with multiple monitors it does not. So just pretend that you're on the login screen; press enter, then enter your password (if you have one) and then press enter again. Altough you will not see it, your PC will be now at the desktop. Now perhaps give it some time, let it load so you can do the next step properly. Now press the windows button + P this should throw you to the multiple monitors setting. Now try to somehow blindly navigate (with arrow keys I presume, I personally have no idea how I managed to do it) and press enter, experiment a bit untill your screen will show. If it now shows, press the same buttons again and put it on Primary screen. Sadly this means you will have to use only one screen for a while, until this is resolved. I really hope this helps
Thank you, it worked for me! I had an HDMI cable linked to my TV screen. I suspected it was something related to video and graphics, was about to switch from GPU to mobo.

All that did was force your graphics to reset, the bug isn't fixed. You can do the same thing by waiting till the boot is finished and putting your pc to sleep. When you bring it back it re-fires your graphics and it will show. Go change a setting and see if it comes back, or in my case just reboot.

I have tried all of these so called fixes. I even got the Microsoft tool to download an ISO and magic jellybean to retrieve my cd key. Then did a completely fresh install from DVD. Same problem on boot up. Quick trip to sleep mode and wake back up to get my desktop. Glady I don't reboot often so it's just an inconvenience.

Below is a Microsoft Knoledge Base entry from April of this year.

"The lock screen in Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 10061 might appear as a black screen with a mouse cursor

When you sign out of Windows 10 Technical Preview Build 10061 and return to the lock screen, you might see only a black screen with a responsive mouse cursor. Pressing the Alt+Tab keys or the Ctrl+Alt+Del keys has no visible effect.

If you are experiencing this issue, follow these steps to sign into Windows:

At the black screen, press the Ctrl key once on an attached physical keyboard. (You won’t see any visible change, but pressing the Ctrl key will place the cursor in the password box that you’re currently not able to see.)

Now type the password of the user that just signed out and press Enter. This will sign you back into Windows and the desktop will appear.

If you failed to sign in because you mistyped the password, press Enter once more. Then retype the password and press Enter." ...

    Your link is broken.
Why don't they fix it? Do we need to wait till service pack 3? It's already 19 pages here, doesn't seem like a rare case.

Ok, I had the issue of black screen but with a cursor.

    1. Check if you have multiple HDMI inputs on your PC

    2. If so then change the current input to one of the others and try starting it again

    3. Now that you can see everything you should be able to disable necessary drivers or change settings

    1. If you use a VGA cable and have a HDMI slot then get an adapter so that you can follow the steps on the other one

Sorry if it's not too helpful

ASUS G20 black screen without cursor.
Press power button for 3 or 4 seconds to turn off the computer.
Press power button again to turn on the computer.
Press "F2" button to enter BIOS setup screen.
Advanced -> System Agent Configuration -> Graphic Conguration -> CPU Graphics Multi-Monitor : From enable to disable
    Exit -> Save and Reset

    This approach worked for me.
Many thanks to the guys who found the root cause of this issue.
