i have the latest insider preview build 16251.
i was wondering, so i dont have to reinstall every program i have which is very many, is it possible to update to the latest public from an insider build? once the public build is released of course.
if i need to explain the situation more please just let me know
i would have figured this would be an easy question to answer.
i just want to be able to install the upcoming new public release on this 16251 insider build without having to reinstall all my apps/programs.

You can't upgrade from the Insider Preview to the Release version, even if the former is newer than the latter. The licensing language makes it clear that this is the case. Alas, you must do a clean install on a machine to switch it over to the current branch release. If you try clicking the "Stop Insider Preview Build" button in the Windows Insider Program page, you'll get a "server unavailable" error message and it won't let you revert to current branch. I just tried it on a couple of machines after reading about this (apparently no-longer-supported) capability at Answers.Microsoft.com. I hope somebody knows better or different, but I remain convinced that a clean install is the only way to get off the Insider Preview and back onto the Current Branch (or some other commercial release, such as CBB or LTSB).

All insiders get updated to the production build of Windows 10. That's the exact purpose of the insider program - to test builds up to and including the production build. Nearing the production build there is always talks among insiders, "Do you think this one is RTM?!?" Finish out this cycle of the insider program, you will get the final production build installed as part of the normal insider program builds. When you get the production build, opt of the Insider Program then.Recover your device
We recommend that you do stop getting builds when your device is on a Production Build so that you do not need to recover your device. Production builds are stable, receive servicing updates, will allow you to stay up-to-date and you will not lose any of the data on your device. If you unenroll while your device is running an Insider build, your device will remain on a build that will not receive future servicing updates, will have an expiry date set, and may contain security vulnerabilities.
and the version i am on is not a production build... right?
Version 1703 Build 15063.xxx is the current production/released version while Version 1703 16257.xxx is the current Insider Preview [test/BETA] version. I run both, on different computers.
As per Navy LCDR's excellent post, I'm guessing that if you wait until RS3/Fall Creator's Update comes out, you will then be able to opt out of the Insider program and "revert" to the Current Branch release. That's not an upgrade, per se, but it sounds like it should work. Thanks!
