You must always backup your files as no method is 100% reliable. Imagine any scenario where you cannot get to the desktop. Imagine a scenario where you boot and there is only a black image. The windows 10 iso gives you a lot of options for operating system corruption but no options for hardware problems. Also the in place upgrade or in place repair requires you to be able to boot to the desktop to locate the iso on the flash drive. In this forum it is highly recommended that you create an image of your drive using Macrium. There may be other software but this software has bailed a lot of people out of drive problems.

The best option is to have the most flexibility for the unexpected. So always have backup and restore plans and this can include creating an image and having available a bootable windows iso.

zbook I was getting ready to create the iso file you recommended in above post a week ago where you provided a link
and when i went to the link today it was different than when i read it a week ago. Today the link took me to Download Windows 10 and last week it took me to Download Windows 10ISO. Did your link expire for some reason? I tried to search for Download Windows 10 Disc Image (ISO File) from within the Microsoft Corporation website but it would just take me to Download Windows 10.

To get the ISO file you click on Download Tool Now. Run the Media Creation Tool that the button downloads. Select the option to Create Installation Media for another PC.

    See option one here:

You can either make a USB flash drive directly from the Media Creation Tool, or you can save the ISO file.

As above NavyLCDR provided the current info.

    Download Windows 10

One more option is to create a desk top virtual dvd.

Then anytime you have an operating system problem you can spend very little time troubleshooting.

Instead just perform an in place upgrade repair with the desktop virtual dvd:

Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials

    For the repair you will:
    1) power on the computer
    2) open file explorer
    3) look for the virtual windows 10 iso dvd on the desktop or the usb windows 10 iso.
    4) click on either one and find the setup or setup.exe folder/file
    5) when it is launched look on the lower left and follow the test and images in the the link to perform an in place upgrade repair.
