Thanks guys for replies so far. Update: Downloaded Windows 10 ISO, Created USB stick (FAT32) with Rufus, selected "mbr partition scheme for UEFI". Attempted to install on Windows partition. Same result as before - can't install on GPT partition. This was with BIOS set to legacy mode. Tried again with BIOS set to UEFI mode, no USB boot option available. So - no further forward.
Any more suggestions?
I am really puzzled why that did not work - is your iso 32bit?
This will work - install from hard disk instead.

and follow instructions.
Suggest you follow NavyLCDR suggestions in leaving Rufus alone and keeping things simple...
It would also help to know the PC specs - motherboard? If Laptop, specific model? This would eliminate the guesswork as to whether the PC supports "booting from a USB stick".

Why use Rufus?
On a Windows computer insert the flash drive. Open a command prompt and run:
diskpart
list disk
select disk # <-replace the # with the actual number for the USB flash drive.
clean <- this will completely erase the selected disk above, make sure it is the USB flash drive.
convert mbr
create part pri
format fs=fat32 quick
active
exit
exit
Then mount the Windows 10 ISO file and copy all the files and folders from the mounted ISO file to the USB flash drive.
In order to install Windows 10 to a GPT partitioned hard drive or SSD, the installation media must be booted in UEFI mode.
