Found another 'fix' for those who like to mess with System Fonts:

    In the Settings, use a semi-colon: h;mm

    instead of a colon: h:mm

(Depends on the font use choose though!)

Found a fix if you want to use custom system font. Go to the registry to:

    HKCU\ControlPanel\International

    Double click on "sShortTime"

Open up Character Map, switch to unicode and search for "colon"

Pick the last one that shows up (U+A789: Modifier Letter Colon)

Copy that and replace the colon in the sShortTime string.

Hit "OK" and wait for the clock to change to the next minute. Blam! Colon :)

    Ahoy!

As an experiment, I tried your method and I can confirm it does exactly what it says on the tin! Excellent info, and if a dufus like me can follow the guide, then anyone can

Yes it worked for me too, just follow exactly in order

    OPEN REGEDIT
    Hkey_Current_User\ControlPanel\International

    Double click on "sShortTime"
    THEN....
Open up Character Map, switch to unicode and SEARCH for "colon"

SELECT the last one that shows up (U+A789: Modifier Letter Colon)

SELECT COPY and then replace the colon in the sShortTime string.

    ALL DONE!

threevolve--i used your method and, yes, there is colon now, but that is all--the numbers have disappeared... i replaced the entire value with the colon. was that a mistake?

EDIT (didn't see option to edit OP--sorry)
i was able to restore the numbers, but the square is back.
again, was replacing the string value with the specified colon incorrect?
i tried to use the description of the colon as well--and ended up with that where the clock should be.
    thanks!

I seriously dusted off this rusty old account just so I could say THANK YOU so much!!

That was the most random...and yet the most relief I've ever gotten from such a stupid UI fix; both at once...

I faked like I gave up caring that my taskbar clock's colon was a rectangle-wingding long ago now...but it secretly still drove me nuts. Haha, so damn, right on seriously. Muchas gracias friend. 👍🤙👊🙏🙏
