Creating disk images for every partition or disk in general is a wise strategy. It's your decision as to when you do that.

My SSD is at slot #5. Should I change it to #1 before proceeding to AHCI?

Well, afterfoloowing your ideas, I have win10 reinstaled from zero, because my image suffered some corruption and did not work well. The most important thing to say is that C: still is without those small partition you showed me.Otherwise it works well
Needless to say that I think you're a very experienced guy. I learned a lot. In my land we call a guy that is good, the good. You are in my opinion, the good
Thanks. But I am puzzled about your partition layout. Can you try this..
First look at
Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Installation Upgrade Tutorials
under
EXAMPLE: Advanced Startup Options at boot for Windows 10
that's what you should see when you do the following:
SHIFT + left click on Restart.
What options do you see?
After considering the matter further, I realized that the most direct route is also often the best path: a complete reinstallation of Windows 10 using a freshly downloaded copy of Windows. Fortunately, Microsoft made reinstalling Windows 10 easier than with other versions of the operating system. In fact, you need only download the Windows GWX tool and image it onto a USB flash drive.
A scan from SFC revealed that the corruption remained. When these kinds of issues persist through a clean install, it strongly suggests hardware failure. Fortunately, on a whim, I upgraded to Windows 10 Anniversary edition. After running SFC, for the umpteenth time, it completed without detecting errors.
That looks about right for a non-UEFI installation. Good.
Now's the time to create a new base disk image (e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external disk) which you cna tehn update periodically. With that you can restore your PC even if you have to replace your disk drive.
