As far as I know, MS never put the keys onto the motherboard; instead, the OEMs did that. And yes, at least with HP, the OEMs still embed keys onto the motherboard for the new Win10 PCs.
Microsoft puts product keys on the motherboards (in the UEFI firmware) of the Surface series of computers:
Buy a new Microsoft surface PC

It's getting hard to keep straight IMHO. Before the Anniversary Update was released, if you installed and activated with a product code, even OEM embedded codes. It would show as "Activated with a Product Code". Only the free upgrades showed as "Activated with a Digital Entitlement". Now pretty well every PC other than Enterprise, gets a Digital License once activated for the first time. OEM and Retail.

Sorry, I wasn't thinking about their Surface PCs ...

I should have said PCs from other OEMs.

Don't sweat it. It is the OEM's who put the keys in the BIOS. Microsoft just also happens to be an OEM in this case. Your original statement was accurate. I think NavyLCDR was just having a little fun. See the :-D at the bottom of his post.

Have MS stopped putting the keys on the motherboard now?
    I perhaps should have said:
Have MS stopped OEMs from putting the keys on the motherboard now?

    My apologies.

I personally don't see keys ever going away completely. How would an OEM, or anybody for that matter, activate Windows 10 for the first time on new hardware that doesn't already have a Digital License? How do you prove you bought Windows 10 and have a right to install it on a device? You need some kind of digital receipt.
