Recurrence of Windows Update failure... 0xC1900101-0x3000D FIRST_BOOT

Previously, I'd gone through a terrible tribulation trying to get my two HP computers from the initial RTM build 10240 to version 1607 Anniversary Update. Spent hours/days trying to troubleshoot it. The only thing that eventually worked was to download a specific ISO file, for version 1511 build 10586.679. I did try updating to 1607 in the next step, but that failed... and I gave up.

Fast forward a couple months, 1607 got pushed to one of my computers successfully. However, the other one ended up failing.

There were many posts about this issue back in the earlier days of people trying to update from RTM 10240. Deja-vu. However, nothing seems to work. I tried downloading the 1607 ISO file and running it... which resulted in the error above after about 1.5 hours. Next, I used the Media Creation Tool to try getting 1607 installed... ran into the same error again.

I did leave the notify Microsoft option in place, so whatever errors were made ended up forwarded to Microsoft. But I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to fix this... or if I'll just have to wait. Any thoughts/suggestions?

    Thanks!

It appears you are trying to do an update. Given the issues your machines are giving you with updating, have you tried copying your data off and doing a clean install from your 1607 media? (Assuming you have a "Image" you can restore from if needed.)
