Upgrade

First, Please check and make sure you system can take a windows 10 upgrade.

Also do you still have the upgrade email/link, i'd keep that.
Then try but if not then, you'll have to buy the win10.

Practically any computer built these days can run W10 but not everything is 100% compatible with W7, actually drivers are problem. There was recent scare about Skylake W7 compatibility for instance. That was resolved but there is still a question of newer processors compatibility with older windows.

I guess my Win8 system; was just a fluke then?
Please explain, as other then divers being a problem;
I lost a windows 8 system to a windows 10 upgrade by
lost; R.I.P lost. It was due to something in the updates/software.
I'm glad that for this user that there is still a way to get win10 for free.

Laptops and some brand name pre-built computers can have a problem with proprietary drivers and/or programs or even BIOS options. Some older (XP and before) HP and Dell laptops and desktops even went so far to require Windows specially modified by respective makers.
Any vanilla, of the shelf parts you buy nowadays to build a computer have more than enough updated drivers for W10. Even W10 setup is more than likely to install 99 -100% drivers for everything. They may not be newest ones but that's easy to tweak after installation.
Newest laptops on the other hand, may even face lack of drivers to support W7 if they come with W10 and you want to downgrade.

Thank you for the clarification, and it indeed was a laptop that I lost due to windows 10, be installed. I will say that then I never even thought to look into if my system was able to take it. So this is why I warn folks to check because if I can save them from it because I found out the hard way then it's worth a post.

Wise precaution, just like checking weather report before leaving the port eh ?
Btw. i served a stint in the navy and used to do some boating mainly in lake Ontario but also Erie when i lived in Toronto and had a 18' boat. Once I made a trip to Quebec City and thru canals.
