Agreed, or to paraphrase the doctors' oath, start with the lowest denominator.
Well, that pretty much confirms it. Do a clean install and have your purchased Windows 10 Home key on hand because you will need since the versions do not match. Unlike a digitally activated license like I have from an OEM 8.1 upgrade, you can transfer yours to any computer as long as it's only on one at any given time. There are plenty of clean install guides in the tutorial section. If you bought 10 Home on a DVD, use that or download the ISO via Media Creation Tool from MS and put on bootable usb. Good Luck
It is not a volume license nor is it pirated. The product key is simply the generic Windows 10 Pro product key that everyone gets when they upgrade from WIndows 7 or 8 Pro to Windows 10. They simply used the generic product key to install Windows 10 Pro, but it wouldn't activate because there was no underlying Windows 7 or 8 that the upgrade to Windows 10 came from.
It does violate the EULA, however, to use Windows without activating it:
5. Authorized Software and Activation. You are authorized to use this software only if you are properly licensed and the software has been properly activated with a genuine product key or by other authorized method.
Notice my properly activated Windows 10 Pro that came from an upgrade from a properly license Windows 8 Pro:
Same product key, same rearm count. Only difference is that mine had a digital entitlement established for activation resulting from an upgrade from Windows 8 Pro.
Thanks for clearing that up. My slmgr /dlv command brings up the same, except partial ProdKey, of course. I guess the op can't just enter his product key, as it's for Home, not Pro.
Right, the Home key won't work with Pro and visa versa. The same key can be used with either the 32-bit or the 64-bit, just have to have the correct disc or .iso file to match.
You will need to install Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Pro isn't activated. So that means soon you wont be able to use your computer. You can learn how to make a bootable USB here (How to easily make an installation USB stick from an ISO - Windows 10 Forums) And you can download a Windows 10 ISO file here (Windows 10)
