ISO's will eventually show up on MSDN. Once that happens somebody will upload them to a web site or on bit torrent etc. It won't be me but somebody will, they always do. Some will create ISO's from Retail DVD's and do the same thing. Will they be clean and unaltered, maybe? I really hope Microsoft does a Media Creation Tool website for 10 like they did for Windows 8. Then you won't have to hunt up a clean ISO when you need it. If clean installs are going to be allowed like Microsoft says, they will be supplying the install media. Why would you do one without the other? Install media is useless without a key so why not let consumers easily download an ISO like you can for Windows 8?

Reading this thread, it seems were all pretty sure MS is going to release ISO's. I'm really remembering 2012 though 2014 of not being able to get an legal ISO of windows 8 or 8.1. I agree that OEM will get ISO's that doesn't really help us out, we would be just as we were with 8 and 8.1 and as Alpha says how are the Activations going to work
Huh? Both were available for in stores on the day it went on sale. The ISO's were available for download from MSDN and TechNet... What do you mean you couldn't get legal ISO's?

You need a subscription to download an ISO from TechNet and MSDN. Those with factory OEM Windows 8 installs had a very hard time finding media to do a clean install with. At first anyway. The first official Microsoft download site would not accept OEM keys.

I believe an OFFICIAL Microsoft Win10 ISO will be available, at least that's what was indicated at WinHEC as reported by WindowsCentral

Whether or not there will be a tool - who knows. I expect there will be one (Win7 had a tool & Win8 had a tool)

It would be a poor business decision to put all of this effort into making sure all machines are running nearly the same level of code and force people to look elsewhere for an ISO - wouldn't it?

People will still find other ISOs - and that's a shame.

As long as I can punch in my Windows 8/OEM Windows 7 key into the Windows 10 installer, then I'll be happy. Right now those keys are unused and I REALLY don't wanna have to install Win8 (because Win 8.1 doesn't accept 8.0 keys) and Win7 just to spend half a day updating until I get the notification.

That said, if MS give us previewers Win10 (been previewing since Oct 2014), then I'd be a happy panda :)

I used my Win8.0 key to Clean install Win8.1 - downloaded the ISO using the Media Creation tool which wasn't always available - you don't need a key to download the ISO, only to install Windows.

I think you will be a happy panda

I'm still here and reading all your thoughts. Thanks guys, interesting discussion :)

Another quick on the fly question over upgrades and/or clean installs.

Will we get control over updates back ? That is, the ability to turn off automatic updating.

This. MS publishes updates to stuff like GPU drivers, and while it's completely fine to have all that install by default, I want the option to disable those non-security related updates, and to choose what I want to install...like in previous versions of Windows.

I would like that option back too. Although I have installed every update offered, there have certainly been the odd problem one (such as the Realtek driver a couple of months back, an update that then got pulled).

I do have doubts though as to just how much control we will regain. It probably sounds a bit silly but not having control over the OS makes it feel less like 'mine' and more like its somebody else's that I've rented out. Silly I know but that's a feeling I get. If I don't have control it won't feel like I own it.
