Windows 10 will not upgrade (partition issue)

So instead of sleeping started digging into upgrading to windows 10.
Dug through forums but could not find any active threads.

Long story short.

1 Windows update did not want to run
2 Ran stc/scanow-fixed the one issue there. (Pulled out much hair in that process.)
3 Ran the update and it said "We couldn't update the system reserved partition" So did some digging and found that it needed 20+gigs.
4 I boot off of my C drive (SSD) and was not going to dump that much onto my SSD. Ya oldy gamer.
5 Partitioned off 40 gigs off my backup HDD

Just please do not tell me I have to partition off my SSD, or will pull out what little hair I have left.

250 gig samsung ssd
500 gig HDD

System partition has to be a certain size, not System Reserved. System Reserved is usally around 350-400MB.

What else is on the SSD? Win7, Win8? Data?

Your easiest path is probably a clean install using the 10.0.074 ISO from the Insider download page.

Windows does all of the heavy lifting - all you need is an empty drive. Install Win10 to that and the partitioning schema is as Windows needs it.

If you cannot do a Clean install, other options are available, but members need more information about your setup.

Not sure why there is 2, apologize for my nubness.
I run Win 7 from the 250 GB SSD and a few games, most programs are on my HDD. Last time I tried to boot from my HDD, my drivers were pretty whacked, and would probably be a huge process, maybe, to get them in shape. Little concerned to do it. Honestly I am wanting to check out win 10, not sure if I want to replace yet. I would not mind doing a wipe on my SSD, even though I do not like writing so extensive on it.
So really I am not overly worried about anything on my SSD, as it can be reinstalled. Just nervous about the windows part is all.

Please update the Systems Specs in your forum profile with complete information- that saves the 20 questions game about your box

• In the System Manufacturer/Model Number field, manually type Desktop or Laptop adding it to the information already in the field. The specific model number is important - there are often many models of a given series.
  For example, my machine is a HP Pavilion dv6, but there are tens of the dv6 series, so dv6-6c10us is the specific model.
  
  
• Specify Custom Build as the manufacturer if it is not an OEM machine.

The easiest way to do this is to use the information from a PUBLISHED Speccy report.

Post the link to the report that Speccy gives you and also open the Speccy link.
Then click here to view your System Specs on this forum.

When you have both windows open, put them side-by-side and simply copy the information, field by field, from the Speccy report to your System Specs.

Why is the 100 MB partition on Disk 1 named Data - what's on there? Shouldn't be anything other than boot data.

What I think you need to do is straighten out the System Reserved reference - this is a common error when members add additional drives and reinstall.

Create a System repair disc or find your Windows 7 install DVD - you might need one of them.

If you don't have either DO NOT continue with the next steps - STOP HERE

Launch an elevated Command prompt (Right click, Run as Admin...)
enter the following commands: (*** are comments, not part of the command set)

Diskpart
lis vol
*** identify the volume labeled System Reserved (might be vol 1-but be certain)
sel vol number
inactive
exit

That prevents the volume from being used as the bootstrap.
See if your system boots - it might not and that's where you'll need the System Reapir disc or Installation DVD

if It does boot, then there are more few steps.

I don't think 100MB is large enough for your system reserved partition. It should be at least 300MB from what I remember.

On Windows 7, the size is 100 MB whereas on Windows 8, it is 350 MB.

Yeah, there's an article about the System reserve size, I'll post it later if I can find it again. 350 MB is geared more to UEFI than BIOS - and there are some additional consideration (250 MB if this, 350 MB if that, < 500 MB if these conditions.......)

I'm running with a 100 MB System Reserve, so that isn't a concern right now. Give me a bit more time to refocus on this issue and read your Speccy.

The System Reserved partition is fine at 100 MB,
a combined System Reserved with Windows RE should be a minimum of 300 MB (per Technet)

If you want to just try the Win10 install again - that might be the most expedient. If you want the machine to be 'technically correct' then go through the process below.

Rather than ask you to go through a bunch of disk schema gyrations (shrink, resize, create extended.create logical, move Windows....), I'll agree with Mystere and suggest that you 'grow' the System Reserve part (labeled Data on Disk 1) to 450 MB.

Keep in mind throughout this exercise that everything is MEGABYTES - I screw that up sometimes - too conditioned I guess.

This takes a bit of work, but it's not difficult. Read through this and ask any questions, once you boot to PW, you'll be incommunicado (unless you have another means to get to the forum which would be great!)

The first thing you have to do is shrink C: - shrink it by 350 MB (your system reserve is already 100 MB, so when you're finished it will be 450 MB)
Selet C:
then select move/resize .. the fields are self explanatory - all you have to do is the math (current size - 350 MB)
set 0 MB after the drive to move it. The graphical interface gives you visual confirmation - you should see 350 MB of free space to the left of C:

PW takes a bit of getting used to operationally. First you tell it what you want to do, then you have to confirm the operation by pressing Apply.
Once you're sure you have it right, hit the Apply
There are two places you can confirm / apply (one is on the left operation pane OR there's also a main button up top)

Half way there....all you have to do now is extend System Reserve (labeled Data)
Select Data
select the move/resize operation
use the slider to consume all of the free space (the 350 you made available in the previous operation)
Once you're sure you have it right, hit the Apply

The partiton should now be 450 MB

Might as well change the labels to avoid any confusion in the future.

Change the volume label System Reserve on Disk 0 to HDD reserve (or anything that makes sense to you)
Change the volume label Data on Disk 1 to System Reserve

Restart your machine and see if Win10 installs.
