Install over Windows 7 has problems - can I reinstall over Windows 7

    OK, I'm trying the Dism command right now. If that doesn't work, I'll go the 'dirty' install route. Thank you. I'll let you know the results when I'm finished. By the way, on one of the forums, I found others with the same 'blinking' problem (maybe this forum).

    OK, Dism couldn't find the source files. Failure.

    You can try to download the ISO from TechBench (the one from media creation tool won't work), mount the ISO which will give it a drive letter. In the same elevated command prompt, run
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:D:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess and press enter, where the D is the letter assigned to your mounted ISO.

    Sorry to say that a reinstall from within Windows 10 did not solve the problem of a blinking/flashing Desktop and Taskbar - not to mention the Notification area and the System Tray. Also, sfc still found corrupt system files that it couldn't fix. I really thought that the reinstall would fix the system files. Before I started the reinstall, I disabled Avast (my AV program. I believe that I did everything else right. I have Windows Pro, 64 bit version. What can I do next? I'm tenacious and don't want to give up and go to a clean install. I have many programs I'd have to install with all their settings. I'd go back to Windows 7 before I'd attempt that. HELP!!!!

    I just noticed that you said that the ISO from the Media Creation Tool won't work. Why not? I created a DVD to do the reinstall - but honestly, I've forgotten where I got it from. I think it was from Microsoft. Tech Bench seems to be out of commission. The only other thing I can think of is to get the ISO from some other source - but where?

    The MCT uses an install.esd (esd is Electronic Software Delivery file) and TechBench (which I was just informed by @lopedoggie is down) uses an install.wim file. That is the file the DISM needs. the ESD file is compressed and the command can't read it, an install.wim is needed. That is the way I understand it anyway.

    Have you tried to create another Admin user account and switch to that?

    Not sure I understand what you just wrote - but what do I do now?

    Also, why doesn't sfc work now? Perhaps some of the system files are left over from Windows 7?

    Yes, the latest Dism completed successfully. I have another user account administrator level. Please tell me what you want me to do. I didn't understand your last post.
