After all in reality there is no such thing as free lunch and I am guessing 10 will be no exception.
Of course there are reasons why it's free for 7 and 8 users, it's because they want people to leave the old Windows branches as soon as possible, so that only the (supposedly) definitive one remains. Less people on 7 and 8 likely means reduced budget on support and maybe even a sooner extended support termination.

KEYCODE ABSENCE PREVENTS FREE $M ISO EFFECTIVE DOWNLOAD

Same as M$, he just switched it around.
Right! the $ stands for money as in a us dollar & M stands for Microsoft. meaning simply Money Microsoft which originally is all that it was after from all of us. Shareholder demands & that.:)

Thanks very much guys for all the well meaning help. I am really Gratified for your info & efforts. Really am!!

OK, so without a $M key-code (right now, that is) an ISO download is currently ineffective to be able to install a win10 OS. So If I take my chances, and download anyway in the hope His Highness Gates Just over the hill here in Seattle, Washington, becomes kind & considerate to us lower income beings several years from now, how much space will this ISO take-up in my wee little HD.

I'd rather save it to a dvd for safe keeping, and that.

Your thoughts are very well appreciated guys. tid bits are also very welcome. Thanks much, Jim

Microsoft gave you an entire year to upgrade your Windows 7 for free to Windows 10. If you didn't like Windows 10, then you just go back to Windows 7. And heck, then 5 years from now if you were finally tired of your Windows 7, since you upgraded once to Windows 10 you could go back to Windows 10 still for free on that same computer. I mean just how generous do you want Microsoft to be? It's not their fault you are too stubborn to just back up your Windows 7 and do an upgrade to Windows 10 now while it is free and then go back to Windows 7 if you don't like it. Maybe you don't understand that once you upgrade to Windows 10 you can go back and forth between Windows 7 and Windows 10 on that same computer as many times as you want - and it's free as long as you do the first upgrade before July 29th.

The ISO file will take about 4 GB for you to store.

A friend and his wife just made the move from 8.1 to 10 while it is still free at least for the 5 days remaining that is! Or simply put the end of this work week! The cost spent last November for OEM for System Builder licensing was to have both 7 and 10 on at least for the time being until either 7 is no longer needed as well as making use of the money that had been spent on 7 but bypassing 8 and 8.1 waiting a working dual platform OS that is after M(ickey)$(ouse got done toying around trying to flop it together.

That's true in your current situation, hence it seems you're forced to this. However, technically speaking, there must be a way to activate the free W10 digital entitlement without proceeding to the upgrade, using your current W7 license data.

Of course it goes against MS' goal which is to get actual upgrades before july 29th, since almost everybody would have his digital entitlement without having necessarily upgraded...

However check this, as it seems MS offers another way to get your digital entitlement without upgrading, as long as you're installing W10 v1511 or later. Still to be done before it's too late, though...

Yes, before July 29th you can clean install Windows 10 and activate it for free by manually entering a Windows 7 product key, except for OEM:SLP product keys. You need a product key from a COA sticker or a retail product key.

Direct updates on OEM devices like laptops and tablets should go without problems even if the initial upgrades should come out buggy. Once the Digital Entitlement is seen to a fresh clean copy of 10 going on shouldn't run into any activation problems afterwards while the guide for a clean install without upgrade first might be an option for some to consider. Seeing a full image made first however will always be the first recommendation for anyone making an OS change.

Btw, not that's it's overly important, but I just noticed that MS seems to have abandoned the term "Digital entitlement" in favor of "Digital license"...
