    Thanks,

Here are some screens that might help. I saved them to Word as I worked.

Should I Be Concerned and Extra Cautious-storageexeconthumbdriveg.jpg
This shows where the files were and that it was then called G:\

Should I Be Concerned and Extra Cautious-storageexecinstallstartong.jpg
This shows, quite logically, that I asked to have the installation on the thumb drive, G:\

I'd rather follow up on installing and running CCleaner than troll through my collection for more useful screen dumps. I started an installation of the Executive program on my old System Disk but canceled it. I then made a folder on my thumb 16 GB thumb drive and installed it there. I can't recall the drive letter designation at the time. I tried to run the update from that installation and it seemed not to like what it saw and refused.

To run the program you shut down all other applications (no screen dumps to Word) and it runs in an environment that is not conducive to digital photography. Just to show how bad it is here's one image.

I've saved a lot of screen shots like this, but not blue on black. What a choice.

    thanks

First download the free version of CCleaner (CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download) When you have it installed, click tools and it will show a list of all the programs. Highlight the Executive program and click uninstall.

It failed to work, see below:

    Back to the alternative,

    thanks

If that doesn't work, run the control panel uninstaller again and say yes to that error.
    Coming up.

I am beginning to feel like Captain John Yossarian!

    Ever see this before?

Should I maybe reboot to clear 'add/remove' programs?

    sorry

Does this make sense? The Executive program created a record of installations completed that was not saved on G:\ but on what is now C"\. That file needs to be found 'dealt with properly' whatever that might be.

    thanks

Are you saying that when you installed it on G drive, it made records on C drive? C drive is where it should have been installed.

Guys, I think the best thing to do here, is disconnect all drives but the one SSD that we want W10 on. Then, boot to the W10 install media and clean install W10 on it. Just get W10 on the machine to grab the digital license. Once that's done, we can worry about everything else. We're running out of time for the free upgrade. If we can't get W10 clean installed on the extra SSD because of hardware incompatibility or lack of drivers, then we won't have to spend time on the upgrade, you know?

baumgrenze, we are running out of time, so I want you to do a clean install of Windows 10. This will tell you how if you have any questions. https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/1...n-install.html . put in your USB drive and download the Media Creation tool. Tell it you want to install it on a USB drive and tell it where it is. It will install it to the USB drive for you. Media Creation Tool.
Once it is finished, disconnect every drive except your new SSD drive. Disconnect all USB devices except the Mouse and Keyboard once the USB is completed.

Boot from the USB drive and select custom install.Do not put in a key, even when it asks for one. Just push skip or I don't have one. When you get to 'Where do you want to install Windows' screen, you should only have 1 hard drive showing. Highlight every partition on the drive one at a time and click delete in the advanced options below the window. Do this until the whold hard drive shows as unallocated. Next click the 'NEW' button. It will give you a warning, click OK and it will create the partitions needed. Then click next. The install will start. There is a video in the first link which will show pretty much exactly what will happen.

When it is completed, we will tell you how to activate it.

    Good News

I successfully ran the Crucial firmware upgrade on the disk to which I cloned the Win 7 System Disk! Big Victory!

It was something I knew but failed to remember. I'd looked at the install of the Crucial Storage Executive (CSE) in ZTreeWin and saw that one of the .exe files was an uninstall. Once I mounted the USB stick and retried installing the CSE on the hard drive with access to G:\ the installation went just fine. I need to see if it is still installed on the thumb drive, but that can wait. It worked beautifully and the interface looks nice.

So, I think we are down to very few steps to do. Is there one more that can be done between 10:45 and 11:30 (so I get some sleep?) or should I wait until morning?

It is hard for you to work with someone with an Emmentaler cheese understanding of Windows. You can never predict if what you expect me to know is cheese or a hole! My maternal maternal forebears were Fam. Beer from Trub in the Emmental.

    thanks bigtime for your patience.

    simrick's List

Here is what remains of simrick's list. It looks dooable

Crystal Disk Info will be OK to leave on; I can confirm it lives through the upgrade without issue.

    1) Remove any 3rd-party anti-virus software, hard drive monitoring software, and Speccy if you have it.

Is this done? Run Ccleaner Free on the registry.

Not done. I believe I need to wait until have removed any 3rd-party anti-virus software and hard drive monitoring software

    2) Download the W10 ISO from MS TechBench

Done. Is it better to copy this to a thumb drive or a DVD? I ran the Win7 ISO from a thumb drive.

    3) Disconnect everything from the computer except, keyboard mouse and monitor. Do not have any drives besides the OS drive connected during the upgrade.

Not Done because my system is not yet ready

    thanks

Wait please - forget my list for now. That is for an "upgrade". We have a change in plans now. We just want to clean install W10 onto your spare SSD drive, so we can get the digital license locked into your system before the free offer expires, okay? No upgrading - clean install a fresh, new copy of W10 on the new SSD and get the license. So, per essenbe's post #97:
