Downloading and mounting the relevant ISO file for Win 10 went fine. It then automatically launched the Win 10 installation routine but soon got stuck on the 'Checking for updates' process. Is it normal for this update check to take an hour or more? Are the Microsoft servers overloaded at certain times of day?

In my experience that is pretty normal. At the option in the install where it asks if I want to check for updates before install, I always decline that. Let it update after install.

I've already taken that option after having to force the check for updates process to end, as it was getting nowhere. At long last, the installation of Win 10 is now under way on my laptop...

The upgrade of my laptop now appears to have completed successfully, including the subsequent application of available updates to Win 10. So far, everything I have tested has worked as expected.

Many thanks to NavyLCDR for the very useful assistance along the way.
