I rebooted, but there was no installation process going on, and it still booted into Build 9926. What can I do now? Thanks in advance for your tips or help.
Yeah, I think it's a throwback to Win7 days. I tried installing Win7 on a VHD and it threw back the same msg "Can't instlall on a VHD"

Every update since 9926 has failed (I think I was running VMs back then, not VHD boots). Anyway, I call it a bug ... MS might claim it's a feature - (you can install and boot with a Virtual drive, but you cannot update it HA-HA-HA-HA-HA)

I've just been installing fresh from an ISO (either created or waited). I have another machine that will test the update process (Win10 installed on a separate partition). This issue actually presents a good test bed - every time a new release is dropped, I have to go through the process - new bugs appear, old bugs are fixed, lots of fun if you're a glutton for punishment

I have fed MS the information, will they fix it? Probably not - the issue is more of a testing issue than a production issue. If people want to carry Win10 around, then Windows-to-go is a better solution than a VHD.

Bear. According to what you have said in this post you have 10041 running. So from what we have seen your build should try to update you to 10049. It should happen tonight so we will expect good things for you in the marrow yes.

    Hi folks.
I'm in the Insider Program, and have been running 10041 on the "slow ring"
Tonight I decided to move on to the "fast ring", and try build 10049.
So, I went into the update settings, changed to "fast ring", and searched for updates. First I got a Defender update, which went fine.
Then came 10049. It took ages but all the files loaded, and the update started.
After a few minutes, the monitor appeared to go to sleep, and I got a black screen.
I thought it might be doing something in the background, but after about 45 minutes I did a hard shutdown. After a couple of attempts, it rebooted into 10041.
So, I tried again. It went exactly the same. This time I left it on the black screen for over two hours (I went out)
Still nothing. So I did another hard shutdown, and then rebooted, This time it took about 10 attempts, but finally I'm back on 10041.
I got a message saying that Windows was unable to update.
I looked at my update history, and it seems that a language pack is failing to install each time.
Could this be balking the update? It looks that way.
    Any ideas people? Cheers, John

I undertook a fresh install of 10041 via on a spare rig that I set up, unfortunately after an update (not sure, but think it was to do with security) the system refused to boot. So now begs the question, do I waste more time and try again, or wait until there is an 10049 or 10056 iso available for download.

Might want to see if the 10049 .esd file downloaded. I had trouble with the update from 10041 to 49 but the .esd file downloaded without a problem and I was planning on a clean install anyway.

Well, after two tries, Build 10049 is finally installed. It took 9 or 10 hours! (And I found out that isn't unusual; others have reported that weird length of time). But it works ok so far.

Good! I have seen that it does take a long time for some to install 10049. Enjoy

I needed about the same time to install it. But it did not really bother me because that was all happening in a virtual machine that noodled quietly in the background.

So maybe I jumped the gun, only giving it two hours?
On the other hand, I did get the message about the language pack failing.
